McMainstream: The Evolving Independence Of The Music Scene

March 3rd, 2008 11:10am EST
Paolo Nutini
As I perused the soundtracks section of a local music store last week, I stumbled upon the Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack, Volume 3. Having apparently missed Volumes 1 and 2, and, admittedly, having only caught the actual show on one or two occasions, I had little notion of Grey's musical backdrop.

But I went in with my assumptions. After all, this is the show that brought "McDreamy" to our national lexicon. Wouldn’t it follow that its music would be lighthearted, upbeat, and, well... McDreamy?

That’s when I flipped the CD over and read the names of the artists on the back.

The New Yorker called it "a sure delight" and Rolling Stone described their distinct sound as "audible sunshine." Their music could be heard on shows like Grey's Anatomy, and they toured throughout the United States, Europe and Japan, bo...

The Bird And The Bee Named One Of "10 bands On The Horizon In 2007" By The L.A. Times; We Agree!

February 8th, 2007 2:00pm EST
the bird and the bee
Inara George and Greg Kurstin, alias the bird and the bee, are an army of two. They listen to everything, and answer to no one. They started playing Jazz standards together, and when they were all out of covers, they wrote some songs of their own.

The outcome is their self-titled debut, an indie pop album that sparkles with tunes that recall Everything But The Girl, Broadcast, Jem, and the lush sensuality of jazz and bossa nova. A sweet and semi-psychedelic ode to sun drenched lazy days.

Over the course of 3 years, they whiled away scattered afternoons in Greg's home studio in Ech...
