Big Boi's "Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors" Review

December 15th, 2012 7:10pm EST
Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors
Antwan Andre Patton (also known as Big Boi) is one of the long standing heavy weights in the hip hop scene. Whereas his former Outkast partner Andre 3000 seems to have entered a self created exit from the scene, Patton continues to innovate and push boundaries. This album could have just been a carbon copy of his last record, Sir Lucious Left Foot and if it had, it probably would have pleased fans and been hailed as masterful. Instead, Patton chose to take the riskiest route possible on this album, and in the end has created an album that is both a masterpiece and a mess at the same ...

He tells GQ magazine, "There's been a lot of talk on the Internet about an OutKast album and I have to say that as of now, there are no plans for another OutKast album.

"There's a lot of music on the horizon. I've been living off the excitement of new artists. I've been privileg...

Review: 'The Greatest Movie Ever Sold' 'Two Jews On Film' Don't Buy Into This One (Video)

April 19th, 2011 11:18am EDT
The Greatest Movie Ever Sold
In 'The Greatest Movie Ever Sold', Morgan Spurlock, ('Super Size Me') takes us into the world of product placement, marketing and advertising. The full title of this documentary is actually 'POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold...because POM Wonderful is the major sponsor of this film.

So how interesting is the world of product placement? It seems now-a-days, most films, especially the big budget action ones, can't seem to exist without branding. (Bruce Willis puts on a pair of Ray-Bans before killing some bad guy, right?)...Spurlock explains that while using brands ...

Review: 'Pom Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold' Is Hilarious, Thought Provoking

April 17th, 2011 11:20am EDT
Movie Hype
"POM Wonderful Presents: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" is the new feature length documentary from “Super-Size Me” glutton Morgan Spurlock, this time tackling the fairly tight-lipped world of product integration and marketing.

He does this by making the entire movie about getting the funding for the movie he's making and you're watching. Basically it's Spurlock attending product strategy meetings in an attempt to sell the rights to specific parts of his film like the official airline, official beverage, official gas station, and so on. For example, the movie is called POM Wonderful Present...

15 Essential Albums Of 2010

December 28th, 2010 11:00am EST
Essential Albums of 2010
I’ve been picking “Best Of” albums for ten years now, and while I’m keenly aware of how subjective the process is, there are a couple of essential rules that must be followed—rules like: Do I think this album will be worthy in a few years? In 2004, my top 3 albums were Absolution by Muse, A Grand Don’t Come for Free by The Streets, and The Grey Album, that now legendary mashup of Jay-Z/Beatles songs by Danger Mouse. I’d say I hit the jackpot with that trio. Invariably, there will always be albums that won’t hold up; like organic material this is unavoidable. But if I think about 2010 in gen...

Jive Records bosses are blocking an Outkast reunion on Big Boi's new album - because they won't free up Andre Benjamin to record with his old pal.

Big Boi jumped labels to Def Jam after Jive executives told him they were stumped on how to promote his new album, Sir Luscious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty. He says, "Jive Records told me my album is a piece of art, and they didn't know what to do with it."

However, the move wasn't a popular one and now Jive bosses are trying to stop the Outkast band mates from recording together.

Yo, my hip-hop brothers, some words of wisdom: these are hard times. Don’t know if you heard, but we’re in a recession. People are losing their homes. Folks’ retirement funds are tanking. People are pawning their jewelry for gas money.

It’s time to reel in the bling. The days of ’90s excess are over and out. All the gold ropes and gold teeth have got to go. You need to trade them in for cash and then hold on to it. Stuff it in those high-tops until the banks are safe again. No more shopping sprees. No more Hummers. No more Cristal. Back to basics, folks. You are not immune. Your record...

Outkast: In a Class of Their Own

As one of the hottest rap groups out today, Outkast has etched a mark in hip-hop history as perhaps the best rap group ever. They're in fair competition, however, with groups like A Tribe Called Quest and EPMD riding dutch. These groups, by coincidence, never took to transforming the perceptions of what many outside the South considered as nothing special into worthy rhyme sayers, putting Atlanta on its back and giving listeners something to nod to.

Outkast's Andre 3000 and Big Boi came together as a group in 1991 and signed to Laface Records in 1992. They were the label's first hip-h...
