Rock Legends Eric Clapton And Tom Petty Release New Albums: This Week In Music

July 29th, 2014 8:00am EDT
Rock Legends Eric Clapton And Tom Petty Release New Albums: This
Last week, July got a bit of a spark with pop-punk band 5 Seconds of Summer releasing their highly anticipated, self-titled debut. Midwest rapper Common would also drop his tenth album, Nobody’s Smiling.

This week, there seems to be no sure-fire bet like 5 Seconds of Summer, but there are some veteran artists leading the charge for the new releases. Those include Eric Clapton, Tom Petty (& The Heartbreakers of course), and the late, great James Brown. Here are five new albums to check out this week.

1) Eric Clapton & Friends, The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, (Bushbranch / Sur...

30 Best Songs Of 2014 (So Far)

July 8th, 2014 8:00pm EDT
30 Best Songs Of 2014 (So Far)
2014 has delivered a wealth of exceptional new songs. Some songs truly captivate with their songwriting, while others are ‘records’ which standout because of their sound. Choosing only 30 songs out of a sea filed with truly terrific songs is difficult; this list provides 30 of the best songs from January through June 2014.

1) Sam Smith, "Stay With Me"

from In the Lonely Hour

Maybe he’s ‘too emotional’ and 'sucks at one-night stands' as he sings, but Sam Smith can definitely sing – that’s the understatement of the year. The soaring, highly relatable “Stay With Me” exemplifies Smith’...

Our March Playlist - Check Out The Best Songs Off The Best Albums This Month

March 31st, 2014 7:00pm EDT
Beck - Morning Phase
March was a rich month for music releases. After listening and reviewing multiple albums, it is always fun to pick out one big time standout. Sometimes it is a difficult choice, while other times it’s the only choice (particularly on a sub-par album). After looking back through my late-February and March reviews, I’ve compiled a playlist of one favorite from each album.

“Morning”

Beck

From the album Morning Phase

Note: Morning Phase was a late February release that wasn’t reviewed until March.

Folks, Beck is the man. Morning Phase was yet another stacked album from the hipster w...

Review: Beck Thrives In Acoustic Setting On 'Morning Phase'

March 13th, 2014 2:15pm EDT
Beck Morning Phase
After six long years, Beck – arguably the coolest musical hipster alive – finally returns with a new LP. Where in the world has Beck been? 2008 album Modern Guilt (a collaboration with Danger Mouse) managed to debut at no. 4 on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart, but wasn’t exactly a splash – understatement. In fact, one would have to skip over Beck’s 2006 effort The Information and look back to Beck’s 2005 LP Guero to find an album that made big waves commercially. 2014’s Morning Phase likely won’t win Beck enduring commercial success, but from a critical standpoint, Beck is on-point, as us...

Oh, the '90s. Too young to be considered hip in an ironic and nostalgic way, it currently sits in the awkward phase, awaiting d-list comedians to show up at VH1 with their best Bill Clinton jokes tucked away for such an occasion. While the decade gave us some spectacular artists like Beck and Nirvana, it also offered the dregs of the musical society with Chumbawamba and MC Hammer. Singstar: '90s has a collection of both worlds, offering the chance to croon along with some of your favorite songs and videos – then cringe at the hilariously bad tunes and their awkward visual pieces.

Defining Greatness: The One-Hit Wonder Scale

February 26th, 2008 11:14am EST
Vanilla Ice
Probably the most underrated term in the music industry is the "One Hit Wonder." Popularized in the 80s, one hit wonders are either regarded as artists with one hit (like Deee-Lite’s "Groove is in the Heart"), or artists who produced a song that everybody knows (like "Turning Japanese" by The Vapors).

However, the truth of the matter is that one hit wonders actually come in many shapes and sizes. There are hits that are huge one day and laughable the next, there are hits that are mildly spectacular at first but ultimately propel the careers of the artists who recorded them, and there a...
