Jimi Hendrix has been named the greatest guitarist in history by Rolling Stone magazine.

The revered music publication put the Purple Haze legend ahead of Eric Clapton and Led Zeppelin star Jimmy Page, who came in at second and third respectively.

A team of experts from the industry, including guitarist Tom Morello, came together with editors to decide their favorite guitar player for the poll, which was released on Wednesday.

Morello says, "Jimi Hendrix exploded our idea of what rock music could be: He manipulated the guitar, the whammy bar, the studio and the stage."

Guitar great Jeff Beck, the Foo Fighters and the Manic Street Preachers were among the big winners at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honor Awards in London on Wednesday night.

Dave Grohl's group walked away with the Band of the Year trophy, while the Manic Street Preachers were handed the Classic Songwriters prize at the ceremony, held at the English capital's Roundhouse venue.

Jeff Beck's lifetime achievements were recognized as he collected the Living Legend Award, following in the footsteps of previous recipients like Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop.

Rocker Rod Stewart is set to lift the lid on his colorful life in a tell-all tome.

The Maggie May legend has signed a deal to release a memoir through Random House publishers and has promised he will "hold nothing back."

The Grammy winner will open up about his early days in The Jeff Beck Group and The Faces, as well as his love life, which includes marriages to Alana Hamilton, Rachel Hunter and Penny Lancaster.

Guitar great Jeff Beck is set to be honored as a living legend by editors at Classic Rock magazine.

The music icon, a former member of British super-group the Yardbirds, will follow in the footsteps of previous winners Iggy Pop and Rush when the Classic Rock Roll of Honor ceremony takes place in London later this year.

A flattered Beck tells BBC News he feels "very honored," adding, "I'm really a backroom boy, not a mainstream rock act. It means someone is out there looking at what I'm doing, which is really nice."

Eric Clapton Makes Millions In Charity Guitar Sale

Eric Clapton has raised a staggering $2.2 million for charity by selling off his guitar collection.

The rock legend announced back in December that he would be auctioning off more than 70 of his prized instruments and 55 amplifiers to help fund the rehab center he set up in the Caribbean.

The 138 lots, which included guitars donated by stars including Jeff Beck, JJ Cale, and Joe Bonamassa, went under the hammer at Bonhams in New York on Wednesday and raised millions of dollars for The Crossroads Center in Antigua.

A 1948 Gibson guitar was the priciest item, selling for $83,000.

I just can’t be snarky on “Idol Gives Back” night. There’s just no way to mock anything that’s for a good cause. So you’ll have to forgive my relatively straightforward recap.

John Mayer, Jeff Beck and ZZ Top will join blues icons B.B. King and Buddy Guy at Eric Clapton's third Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago, Illinois. The event, which benefits Clapton's Crossroads Center in Antigua, will also feature the guitarist's former Traffic bandmate Steve Winwood, Robert Cray and Sheryl Crow.

The star-studded concert will take place on June 26.

Clapton's last Crossroads festival took place in Chicago in 2007.
