CD Review: Various Artists - 'Take Action Volume 10'

May 16th, 2011 4:08pm EDT
take action volume 10
Take Action Volume 10 is a record we all should own. Honestly, we should all do everything we can to purchase this compilation every year, if not for the music, then for the simple fact that a percentage of proceeds from album sales go directly to charity. Sure, the names and faces change from year to year - this year the benefitting charity is a national Teen-to-Teen Sexuality Education Project, which reaches millions of teens each year with teen-written sexual health information through the Sex, Etc. Magazine and website, Sexetc.org; and a national Sexuality Education Training Initiative,...

Bad Flirt Showcases High Energy Pop Rock On 'Virgin Talk'

March 25th, 2009 5:30pm EDT
Bad Flirt
Armed with an acoustic guitar, some drum loops and a Greyhound bus pass, Bad Flirt was once just a touring solo project for singer/songwriter Jasamine White Gluz.

After diving into the Montreal scene in 2002, a then small but vibrant community, Jasamine decided to expand Bad Flirt into a full group by enlisting various musicians she met on her travels. They then began an intense North American touring schedule that included shows with Paramore, The Kills and Bayside. It was at this time that the Canadian outfit caught the attention of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen, who deemed Bad Flirt...

The Learning Curve: This Week's Lesson Is Rock

March 11th, 2009 10:11am EDT
Disciple
This week's article is devoted to rock music, whether it's scenesters, 90'salt-rock, hardcore, and southern hard rock. You should hear, see and read about a lot of faces you might have seen before, but this time they are in different places.

If you want to hear something maybe a little different from the norm, check out TV/TV or Damn This Desert Air. If you want hard rock, then lean towards F5 and Disciple, but if you want your music very, very heavy - Kill What I Adore is right up your alley.

Enjoy.

Music Review: Say Anything's 'In Defense Of The Genre' Satisfies, Challenges Listeners

October 22nd, 2007 3:09pm EDT
Say Anything
Say Anything’s ...Is A Real Boy caught most of the music scene off-guard, despite the buzz rumbling from inside the genre (rock, punk? does it matter?). Full of desperate lyrics that cut into cliques of people and music, frontman Max Bemis poured his life and well-being into the album – he recorded every instrument except drums - and a few years after the album’s release he was admitted into a hospital with bi-polar illness. With the illness mostly behind him, Bemis re-grouped and wrote another giant concept album, In Defense of the Genre.

The only thing more staggering than the two-CD...

Bayside To Release Acoustic CD/DVD

January 21st, 2006 7:57pm EST
Bayside
A musician's life is a landscape filled with cheap, flashy distractions – is it possible to suffer through self-examination and benefit? Working within lush sonic landscapes, Bayside makes documenting faithlessness seem like an exercise in beauty, with rich vocals soaring over rock-solid arrangements spiked with truly imaginative guitar solos. While Bayside's Victory Records debut, Sirens and Condolences (click for review), resided in the territory of bleak hopelessness and helpless fury, in their self-titled album released in August of 2005, rays of hope shine through. When Raneri sings, "...
