11 Songs That Break Barriers

October 19th, 2014 4:00pm EDT
11 Songs That Break Barriers
Sometimes, you have to take a stand. Taking a stand isn’t always a popular move, nor is it always personally lucrative. Musically, ‘taking a stand’ often means that musicians promote an unpopular or not oft tread platform, theme, or cause. That means ultimately, these bold musicians look to break barriers and pave the way for acceptance, tolerance, and otherwise. Here are 13 songs that break barriers of some sort.

1) Hozier, “Take Me To Church” (Hozier, 2014)

“Take Me To Church” is nothing short of brilliant and progressive. Hozier makes sex sound sanctified, brings light to ...

Fashion Fails: Paris Hilton, Madonna, Pharrell, More

February 1st, 2014 3:03pm EST
Paris Hilton
It's Fashion Fail Time! That means we take a break from letting you know how good all of your favorite stars look to show the other side of fashion: the fails!

Of course the looks from last Sunday's Grammy Awards are going to dominate this week's fails. First we have Paris Hilton, who ruined a beautiful white gown by adding faux-nude panels. Now it just looks tacky.

Madonna tried her best Colonel Sanders impression during the Grammys. Beautiful song, sure, but her outfit was ugly. Her red carpet look wasn't much better.

Someone loved Pharrell's hat enough to create a twitter acco...

2014 Grammy Awards Reactions: The Triumphs And Fails
Another year and another Grammys ceremony has come and passed. As always, there were moments that thrilled while others made me curse under my breath. Luckily, as a music journalist, this guy has learned how to think like the Recording Academy, hence the accuracy of many of my picks this year. Still, even being correct, you have to wonder what the Academy is thinking sometimes. Yes, I’m specifically referencing the fact that Kendrick Lamar was shut out – ridiculous! But here goes nothing examining the awards given.

The Big Four: Record, Album and Song of the Year & Best New Artist

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards Broadcast takes place on Sunday, January 26th. First things first, let’s look at the BIG FOUR predictions

Thoughts On The 56th Annual Grammy Nominations

December 9th, 2013 8:50pm EST
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
The Grammys are like a musician’s Super Bowl, even if the nominations and victorious artists are flawed.  I won’t lie to you, I complain every year that someone won a Grammy that didn’t deserve it while someone else was snubbed. Just last year, during the 55th Annual Grammys, I lobbied hard for Frank Ocean (looking back, I have reservations now) while Mumford & Sons walked out with the Album of the Year trophy.  The year that Taylor Swift won for Fearless, my girl Beyoncé was on a roll until the coveted Album of the Year award was read.  You get my position though! This year,  I find myself...

Sara Bareilles On Katy Perry Comparison: 'I Don't Feel Like Anything Was Taken From Me Artistically'

September 21st, 2013 7:39pm EDT
Sara Bareilles
Katy Perry's latest single, "Roar", has drawn heavy comparison to Sara Bareilles' single "Brave", which was released back in April, but where most artists would immediately file a plagiarism lawsuit Bareilles says she has no problem with it.

Fans lashed out at Perry, accusing her of ripping off the melody of "Roar" from "Brave", but Bareilles is actually thrilled over it.

"I was stoked. I was like, 'Great,'" Bareilles tells Billboard.com. "I was like, 'You guys want to go get (mad) about something and buy my music, that's great.'"

Sara is upset that her fans got "aggressive" over the sim...

Sara Bareilles, We Love You But…

Sara Barielles : The Blessed Unrest
This is not your standard review… or really a review at all.  Take it how you want to. Sara Bareilles is one of the better songwriters of recent times, like really.  Face it, ole gal has a way with words, something so much of pop music is missing these days.  The rub (and you knew it was coming) with Bareilles on her most recent effort, The Blessed Unrest is that perhaps she’s too good with her words and too comfortable with her style.  What? Criticizing an artist who has established an identity rather than choosing to conform to everybody else?!? That’s shameful Brent, shameful! But I ain’...

The Sing-Off
It's down to the wire on NBC's The Sing-Off. Before tonight's live finale, I chatted with Danielle Withers from the much beloved Afro-Blue.

The jazz ensemble from Howard University tackled a mash-up of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" combined with "Fly" by Nicki Minaj with Rihanna, and then the judges handed them the Sam Cooke classic "A Change Is Gonna Come." They battled it out with the Dartmouth Aires for the final spot in tonight's finale, but ultimately came up short.

That didn't stop them from leaving an impression on the audience or even their fellow contestants - you'll recall ...
