Reggae star Buju Banton is appealing his federal drug conviction, insisting there was not enough evidence to prove he was involved in a cocaine conspiracy.

The Grammy Award winner's attorney filed appeal papers on Friday claiming his client was the subject of entrapment by a federal informant who hounded the singer.

Banton, real name Mark Myrie, is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence following his conviction in February.

Embattled reggae star Buju Banton has been sentenced to serve 10 years behind bars for allegedly planning a cocaine deal in 2009.

The Jamaican hit-maker was taken into custody two years ago after he was busted with two other men. The case originally went before a judge last year but ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict.

A second trial got underway in a Florida court in February and Banton was convicted on three counts - including conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute cocaine, which carries a potential 15-year sentence.

Reggae star Buju Banton is facing up to 20 years in prison after he was convicted on drug charges on Tuesday.

The Jamaican star, real name Mark Myrie, was hit with four cocaine-related counts stemming from an arrest in 2009, which related to a drug deal he was planning with two other men. Banton boasted about his drug connections to a federal informer on a flight from Spain to America.

Reggae star Buju Banton will have to spend another two months in police custody after his trial date for drug charges was delayed until June.

Banton, real name Mark Myrie, has been behind bars since his December arrest, when he was caught allegedly attempting to buy more than five kilograms of cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer in Sarasota, Florida.
