Band of Holy Joy
Tracksuit Vendetta
Release Date: 1992
Label: Ecuador
Rating:

Following the - albeit , temporary - collapse of their record label Rough Trade, the Band of Holy Joy (now abbreviated to just Holyjoy) released Tracksuit Vendetta on the new Ecuador label. Promotion was limited, meaning the album quickly slipped into obscurity. Musically, the UK was recovering from the double-influence and decline of Madchester and the rave culture. This was mirrored by the latest offering from the Band of Holy Joy - an album closer to recovery from previous excesses rather than the usual emotional maelstrom. Synthesizers and guitars are more important to the album's sound, in contrast to the trombones and fiddles of songs gone by. Johny Brown continued to explore the magic of everyday life but also offered commentary on the lives of others, most notably Marvin Gaye in "Marvin In Ostende". Altogether, Tracksuit Vendetta saw Holyjoy, for better or worse, grow up and mellow out. Christian Smillie, All Music Guide
