B-Side PlayersMovement Release Date: 2001 09 11 Label: Surfdog Rating: ![]() |
Movement by the B-Side Players is a high-energy, multi-genre stew with the distinct flavors of reggae, funk, Latin jazz, rock, and hip-hop. Movement has a lot of social and political substance and is a memorable release. "Souldier" is a Marley-esque call for hope and pride in the face of troubling times. "Puro Feeling" combines an Issac Hayes funk groove with a flamenco rhythm and a jazzy melody, making it a perfect hit for a sunny day. The band wonderfully celebrates its individualism in "Spill the Wine." None of the eclectic musical choices, like adding a DJ scratching to a heavy metal song, seem forced. The uplifting social comments in the B-Side Players' songs cover tolerance, higher consciousness, and peace. The album includes reworkings of older B-side songs (including "Baila"), and sounds like a jazzy, funky, Latin Rage Against the Machine. The B-Side Players are part of a Movement toward an integrated, diverse, and inspired future. This organic, intelligent album is highly recommended, especially for fans of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage, and similar bands. JT Griffith, All Music Guide
