Birth Place: San Diego, California, USA
Years Active: 2000–present
Genres: Metalcore

As I Lay Dying is a metalcore band from San Diego, California that formed in 2000 by vocalist Tim Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancino. Initially a duo, the band expanded within a year to include lead guitarist Nick Hipa, rhythm guitarist Phil Sgrosso, and bass player Josh Gilbert. Despite all the band members being of Christian faith, the band does not necessarily write – or sing – about their faith or consider themselves a “Christian metal band.” The band was originally offered a record deal from Pluto Records, and released their debut album, which went largely unnoticed outside of metal and Christian music circles. By 2003, after extensive touring, As I Lay Dying were offered a record deal with Metal Blade Records; their debut for the label, “Frail Words Collapse” arrived later that same year and peaked at #30 on Billboard's Independent Albums Chart, and # 41 on the Top Heatseekers Chart.

As the band began to gain more exposure, their fan based began to swell; they were also able to cross over to non-religious markets. 2005 saw the band extensively touring with a performance on the Ozzfest that year, in addition to a tour with Slipknot and Unearth, and sharing the stage with Rob Zombie, Killswitch Engage, Mastodon, The Haunted, and It Dies Today. 2007 saw the band back in the studio working on their fourth album, “An Ocean Between Us,” which peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 200 Chart. As I Lay Dying secured a spot on the Warped Tour, which was followed by a tour in Europe with Darkest Hour, Himsa, and Maroon. The band's efforts garnered them a Grammy Award nomination for 'Best Metal Performance' for the song “Nothing Left.” 2008 saw the band perform at the Warped Tour for a second time, followed by the Taste of Chaos U.K. Tour with Atreyu. The band's fifth offering, “The Powerless Rise” arrived in 2010 to widespread critical acclaim.

2012 marked As I Lay Dying's entrance back into the studio with producer Bill Stevenson to begin work on their sixth album. 2012 also saw the band on the Mayhem Festival with Slipknot, Slayer, Motörhead, Anthrax, The Devil Wears Prada, Asking Alexandria, Whitechapel, Upon A Burning Body, I the Breather, Betraying the Martyrs and Dirtfedd. “Awakened” was released in 2012; currently the band is touring in support of the album.
