Arthur Lee Conley was an American soul singer, best known for his hit song "Sweet Soul Music,” in 1967. Born on January 4, 1946 in McIntosh County, Georgia, Conley did most of his growing up in Atlanta. Conley's beginning in music came in 1959 as he began to record with his band, Arthur & the Corvets. Conley released three singles in 1963 and 1964: "Poor Girl,” "I Believe," and "Flossie Mae," all on the record label, National Recording Company. In 1964, Conley switched to Ru-Jac Records, who put out, "I'm a Lonely Stranger.” Conley met the legendary Otis Redding in 1967, and brought his song “I'm a Lonely Stranger” to Redding's attention, who re-released the song on his own label, ...
