Damon Albarn Hints That Gorillaz Is Over

April 9th, 2012 9:56pm EDT
Gorillaz
Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn has shed doubt on the supergroup's future after revealing he and co-founder Jamie Hewlett have fallen out.

Just days after announcing his Britpop band Blur's summer Olympics gig will be their last ever, Albarn reveals his other chart-topping act is also on an indefinite hiatus.

He says, "I think we (Albarn and Hewlett) were at cross purposes somewhat on that last record, which is a shame. So until a time comes when that knot has been untied...

"The music and the videos weren't working as well together, but I felt we'd made a really good record, and I was in...

Blur Call It Quits

April 8th, 2012 2:30pm EDT
Blur
Reunited British rockers Blur will bow out of the spotlight for good after their appearance at an upcoming summer concert to celebrate the London Olympics.

The Universal hitmakers will take to the stage on August 12 for a huge musical event, also featuring New Order and The Specials, at London's Hyde Park - the same venue where the band performed two triumphant comeback gigs in 2009.

Blur will also release a new single entitled Under the Westway around the same time as the big show - but frontman Damon Albarn has quashed speculation an album of fresh material will follow, because he wants...

Blur To Be Honored At Brit Awards

December 8th, 2011 8:39am EST
Blur
British rockers Blur will be honored with the Outstanding Contribution to Music trophy at next year's Brit Awards.

The Parklife hit-makers returned to the music scene in 2009 after a six-year hiatus to headline a series of U.K. festivals and guitarist Alex James revealed earlier this week the band will get together over the festive period to "probably" record new material.

Now, it has been announced they will regroup at the annual Brit Awards at London's O2 Arena in February to be presented with a special prize in recognition of their career achievements.

It it not known whether the b...

Bobby Womack Credits Gorillaz For His Comeback

August 27th, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Bobby Womack
Soul legend Bobby Womack has credited Damon Albarn's group Gorillaz for kickstarting his career after excessive drug use robbed him of his creative edge.

The singer/songwriter, dubbed 'the last great soul man', all but quit the music business following the death of his infant son in 1978 and he admits much of the music he wrote and recorded after the tragedy wasn't up to his previous standards.

And he'd quit completely when Albarn called and asked him to be part of Gorillaz for the group's Plastic Beach album.

Womack tells WENN, "I went through burn-out... I was always doing music or wor...

New Blur Album Still On Hold

January 17th, 2011 4:32pm EST
Blur
Blur rocker Dave Rowntree has urged fans not to anticipate an album from the band this year, insisting the group's plans to record its first record in almost a decade are not "concrete".

The Parklife hitmakers returned to the music scene after a six-year hiatus to headline a series of U.K. festivals in 2009.

Frontman Damon Albarn, who has been touring with his other band Gorillaz, revealed late last year that the group was planning to work together again, fuelling reports the band is preparing to record a new album - the first since 2003's Think Tank.

However, drummer Rowntree insists ...

Damon Albarn To 'Glee' Producers: 'Don't Ask'

December 23rd, 2010 12:12am EST
Gorillaz
Gorillaz and Blur star Damon Albarn has warned Glee producers not to contact him about using his songs on the TV show - because he can't forgive them for stealing the Beatles' U.S. pop chart record.

Albarn has yet to be asked to be a part of the hit musical show but he insists he'll never agree to let his songs be a part of the program.

The Brit is still upset by the fact the cast of Glee toppled the Fab Four's record for most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 by a non-solo act earlier this year.

Albarn says, "Those songs won't last like the Beatles... They'll be forgotten in a few ye...

Damon Albarn Considers Retiring Gorillaz

December 6th, 2010 10:43am EST
Damon Albarn
Damon Albarn is considering retiring Gorillaz when the band's current world tour comes to an end, because the British rocker can't "keep going at this size and pace."

The Blur frontman has been touring extensively with the group this year, taking their Escape To Plastic Beach shows to Asia, Europe, Australia and North America, as well as enjoying headline slots at the U.K.'s Glastonbury festival and Coachella in California.

The tour wraps up in New Zealand later this month, and Albarn has scheduled a "period of reflection and sobriety" to consider the band's future.

He says, "It's been ...

Gorillaz Plan Dennis Hopper Glastonbury Tribute

June 25th, 2010 12:00pm EDT
Gorillaz
Gorillaz will pay tribute to late acting legend Dennis Hopper during the band's headlining slot at Britain's Glastonbury festival - by projecting images from his Easy Rider movie on to the stage.

The band, fronted by Damon Albarn, has been drafted in to replace U2 on Friday night after the Irish rockers pulled out due to Bono's recent back surgery. And the group is determined to make the show a poignant one by remembering Hopper - who befriended Albarn after narrating Gorillaz's track Fire Coming Out Of The Monkey's Head in 2005.

Albarn tells Britain's The Sun, "I think he'd be happy wi...

Gorillaz Replace U2 At Glastonbury (Video)

May 26th, 2010 12:35pm EDT
Gorillaz
Damon Albarn is preparing to headline Glastonbury for the second year in a row - his virtual band Gorillaz has stepped in to replace U2 at the legendary British music festival.

The Irish rockers were forced to pull out of their headlining slot at next month's event, as well as the next leg of their world tour, after frontman Bono was admitted to the hospital on Friday for emergency back surgery.

Rumors were rife over who would take U2's place at Glastonbury, with online reports suggesting Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, AC/DC or even Led Zeppelin could step in to the coveted slot.

Howe...
