Air is a music duo from Versailles, France, consisting of Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel.
Air's debut EP, 1997 “Premiers Symptômes,” was a collection of early singles released between 1995 and 1997. The EP was followed by the critically acclaimed full-length album, 1998’s “Moon Safari.”
“Moon Safari” scored hits with the tracks "Sexy Boy," "Kelly Watch the Stars!" and "All I Need" (which features vocals by Beth Hirsch). “Moon Safari” debuted at #6 on the UK Album chart.
Air wrote and performed the score to the 2000 Sophia Coppola film “The Virgin Suicides” for which an album and separate soundtrack album were released. Although credited on the score album liner as “Gordon Tracks,” vocals on "Playground Love" are provided by Phoenix singer Thomas Mars.
“10 000 Hz Legend” was released in 2001 and featured tracks which were longer and more electronic-oriented than on their previous records. These experimentations find the duo expanding their capacities and working with other artists including Beck and Buffalo Daughter.
2002 saw the release of “Everybody Hertz,” a remix album featuring remixed versions of songs from their “10 000 Hz Legend” album. The remixes are mostly by other artists, including a version of "Don't Be Light" by The Neptunes.
Their next album, “Talkie Walkie,” was released in 2004. The track "Alone in Kyoto" was featured on the soundtrack to the 2003 Sophia Coppola film “Lost in Translation” and the track "Run" was used on an episode of “Veronica Mars.”
Air wrote and played the music of the album “5:55” by French actress and singer Charlotte Gainsbourg, which was released in August 2006.
In 2007 Air released their fifth LP, “Pocket Symphony,” featuring collaborations with Jarvis Cocker and Neil Hannon. “Pocket Symphony” incorporated some of the Japanese instruments Godin learned to play from an Okinawan master musician including the koto (also referred to as a Japanese floor harp) and the three-string, banjo-like shamisen. “Pocket Symphony” debuted on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart at #40 and reached #1 on the Billboard Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
“Love 2” was released in 2009 and peaked at #36 on the UK Albums chart, while reaching #100 on the Billboard 200 and #5 on the Dance/Electronic Albums chart.
