The Agency
Turn
Release Date: 2007 02 06
Label: Perch Records
Rating:

Featuring members of Seville and Dashboard Confessional, the Agency don't stray too far from the emo-tinged, power punk pop/rock that the aforementioned bands are known for. At least that's the first impression the listener gets. A song like the opening "Walking Disaster" is strong and brimming with catchy riffs, but it's not exactly a memorable or jaw-dropping song. Led by the tandem of Mike Marsh and Chris Drueke, the group falls somewhere in between bands like My Chemical Romance and Taking Back Sunday. However, "Found" shows a lighter, more melodic arrangement that doesn't quite work as well. This is refined with much better results during the angular, dance-rock ditty "I'm Innocent" which is closely similar in parts to ˇForward Russia!. This is returned to somewhat during the pretty "Mary Mourn" which could have been picked from XTC singer Andy Partridge's pocket. However, the band seems to truly hit their stride with the radio-friendly and extremely tight "Picture" that has the huge, dramatic chorus to boot. Perhaps the sleeper pick on Turn is a very decent pop song titled "Chasing" that has a great melody and just as fine guitar work. The Agency takes things down a few notches with the piano-fueled "Clean Water" that sounds like a distant cousin of Tears for Fears. Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide
