Sony Pictures Surpasses $1 Billion in Box Office Dollars

Sony Pictures Entertainment has surpassed the $1 billion mark in box office receipts for calendar year 2006, making it the fifth year in a row the studio has reached that milestone at the box office.

The announcement was made by Jeff Blake, Chairman of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for the Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group and Vice-Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

The Jackass stars as Steve Barker, a man who fakes a mental disability in order to win a cash prize at the Special Olympics. Although his teammates are aware of his scheme and can outdo him athletically, they need Barker to help defeat Jimmy, the arrogant reigning champion of the games. 'The Pink Panther' Takes Top Spot at Box Office

Steve Martin's portrayal of Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther pounced to the top of the box office with a $21.7 million in its opening weekend. The remake of the 1963 comedy classic opened to mixed reviews but was able to sneak past horror film Final Destination 3, which grossed $20.1 million.
