Robert Wise coming off his great film "I Want To Live" directed this superb version of the great Broadway Play. Seen today the film may look too sanitized for a film about gangs in New York but it still packs a great wallop. Rita Moreno dominates this film with her scalding portrayal of Anita and richy deserved her Oscar. George Chikiris her co star also won an Oscar. Natalie Wood playing Maria insured box office magic for this film and is also very fine. Richard Beymer who was being groomed at 20th to be a major star plays Tony quite well. The Dance At the Gym sequence directed by Jerome Robiins is tremendous and a highlight of this masterful film. | ||
