West Bank Brooklyn Movie Review

The story lines in West Bank Brooklyn won't seem particularly groundbreaking to people familiar with movies about the conflict between old-world values and new-world realities, just as Ghazi Albuliwi's funny and perceptive comments about religion and society won't come as a big surprise to those familiar with the comedy routines of Bill Hicks. But this earnest, humanistic, and generally well-crafted movie is quite appealing even if it isn't particularly original. The pacing is reasonably tight, the performances by Charles Daniel Sandoval, Bronson Picket, Hany Kamal, and others are engaging, and Albuliwi has a good sense of comic delivery that probably derives from his experience as a standup performer. The film's positive message isn't particularly subtle, but it isn't too ham-fisted either; this is just good, straightforward storytelling. Todd Kristel, All Movie Guide
