James Franco Is 'Stoner Of The Year'

James Franco was named Stoner of The Year for his portrayal of a dazed drug dealer in Pineapple Express at Saturday's Stony Awards in California.

The eighth annual High Times prizegiving, which honors pro-marijuana storylines and portrayals on the big and small screen, also served up wins for Danneel Harris, who was crowned Stonette of the Year for playing Vanessa in Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and Franco's "Pineapple Express," which was named the past year's Best Pot Comedy Film.

Doesn't it seem, at times, that the year 2000 is still in the future? This mostly seems the case when the word "year" appears before "2000;" regardless, I had to do a double take when I first learned that we now live in an era that is producing 1990's era period pieces.

"The Wackness" takes place in New York City circa summer 1994. It's an interesting time for New York that saw the beginning of the Giuliani era and the end of, for better or worse, any tolerance whatsoever for crime.

We saw it with Drew Barrymore and then again years later with Lindsay Lohan and most recently with Mary-Kate Olsen. Current "It" stars like the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus will undoubtedly follow suit in the next few years.

They are child stars that want to turn into more serious entertainers as they get older, hoping the fans that are also growing up will follow them into more adult ventures. They take on roles they perceive as "serious" or "artsy," they change their look to try to separate themselves from their younger image, and they often take behind-the-scenes hybrid titles...
