Oliver Stone Planning A Controversial History Channel Series
Director Oliver Stone is courting controversy with his new TV mini-series - he plans to put historical villains "into context." The W film-maker's new documentary show, Secret History of America, will focus on dictators including Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Chinese communist leader Mao Tse-tung, as well as events that shaped the United States' history.

And Stone is adamant he will put forward a new perspective on some of history's most evil men.

He says, "Stalin, Hitler, Mao, these people have been vilified pretty thoroughly by history. Stalin has a complete other story. Not to ...

"In the comic book he's this alcoholic curmudgeony kind of guy," Brolin said. "You know he's a bounty hunter, kind of goes from place to place just trying to get trough the day. Not in the comic book, but from my perspective he's loosely based on this guy Col. Seaver, who exist...

Richard Dreyfuss
WASHINGTON (AP) — Oscar-winner Richard Dreyfuss visited the nation's capital on Wednesday to call attention to the most endangered Civil War battlefields.

The actor joined the Civil War Preservation Trust as the group released its annual report on 10 battlefields that it says are deteriorating due to neglect, land development and other threats.

At a news conference, Dreyfuss said his interest in preserving Civil War battlefields grew out of his love for history and the significance of the war.

"We are the consequences of that war and the more we know about our past, the bette...

Sean Penn
Before we get started on the Mega Oscar Diary, let's go to a few random ramblings from the cadre of pre-shows around the dial:

-Philip Seymour Hoffman's hat probably came with a matching set of fingerless gloves.

-Those who were unable to see the Los Angeles CW affiliate's pre-show missed this exchange.

-The CW's Female Host: What is the role you'd love to do next. If you could do anything following 'The Wrestler' what would it be?

-Mickey Rourke: (Slowly eyes her up from head to toe with a knowing smile and walks off.)

-I know a lot of people care about fashion, ...

Sellers' famous role in the 1964 Stanley Kubrick film beat out Harrison Ford's James Marshall (Air Force One) and Kevin Kline's William H. Mitchell (Dave) in the CNN Inauguration Day countdown.

The only real-life leader to make the list is outgoing U.S. leader George W. Bush, as portrayed by Josh Brolin in W. He comes in at number 10.

Writer's Viewpoint: A Visit To 'Inside The Actor's Studio' With Josh Brolin

December 2nd, 2008 1:53pm EST
Josh Brolin
There is always a peculiar aura in the air when James Lipton shows up on my television screen; I am quite transfixed with pure unadulterated fascination. Having said that, it should come to no one's surprise that I did not think twice when given the chance to attend a taping of "Inside the Actor's Studio" and be in the presence of Mr. Lipton once again (I had once seen him walk by me at a New York Mets game. Although I do hold out hope, I doubt he remembers me.)

Recorded on a blistering cold (well, not quite but it sounds good for effect) evening at Pace University, the guest of honor ...

10 Things We're Thankful For This Year - What Are You Thankful For?

November 27th, 2008 9:35am EST
Stephen COlbert
Before we fall into the annual Thanksgiving tryptophan coma, we'd like to take a few minutes to give thanks for some of the best pop cultural presents received in 2008.

Paul Rudd

This year, the ubiquitous, sexy-silly actor showed up in “Over Her Dead Body,” “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and “Role Models,” guested on HBO’s “Little Britain USA,” and hosted “Saturday Night Live.” Add to that the near-constant airings of “Knocked Up” on HBO and “Clueless” on every other channel, and it’s virtually impossible to get away from the guy…which is just how we like it!

If you play for th...

Five Most Overrated & Underrated Political Films

November 14th, 2008 9:57am EST
We just went through the most fascinating and compelling election season ever in the television age. A lot of people are glad it's over, but there are those who simply can't get enough of the entertainment that is politics.

Unfortunately for the latter group, the only politics on TV right now involves Sarah Palin making the rounds and discussing the matters of a state with a population density that makes the Sahara Desert look like mid-town Manhattan. In other words, it's a snoozer.

So the last respite for these political junkies is the political movie. But which to choose? Th...

Josh Brolin Swaps Gambling For Wall Street

October 31st, 2008 1:04pm EDT
Wall Street Fat Cat?
Hollywood actor Josh Brolin enjoys trading on the stock market - because it stops him gambling on horse races.

The W star admits the profits he's garnered from his Wall Street decisions have allowed him the freedom to pick and choose which films he makes. And stock market trading gives him the same buzz as betting - without the odds stacked against him.

Brolin says, "I like to do it. It enables me to offset movies that I might otherwise have had to do for the money. Plus it stopped me gambling. I used to go to Vegas and play the horses, and then I realized how ridiculous that wa...

October 24th, 2008 10:23am EDT
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin insists America's current economic crisis is good for him because he's making big bucks from his sideline career as a stock broker.

While the real President, George W. Bush, loses sleep about the recent stock market crash, the actor who plays him in biopic W is loaded.

Brolin co-owns brokerage firm Market Probability LLC, and he insists business is good: "We're up 73 percent this year at a time when everyone's down."

Canny Brolin is also an investor in a real estate company. He adds, "I've always made more money from those gigs than from acting."

Chevy Chase Not Impressed By Sarah Palin's 'SNL' Appearance

October 20th, 2008 12:18pm EDT
former SNL alum
Comedian Chevy Chase wasn't laughing at U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's guest appearance on sketch show Saturday Night Live this weekend, insisting TV bosses made a "big mistake" inviting her on.

The National Lampoon's Vacation star, a former SNL alum, was not impressed by Palin's lack of improvisation skills on Saturday's program, which was hosted by W star Josh Brolin and featured Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin.

Palin appeared in an opening skit with staunch Democrat Baldwin, and again in the Weekend Update segment, when she nodded along to a rap song by SNL's A...

Thandie Newton
Chilly months are closely approaching, but regardless of this fact, some Hollywood starlets still manage to put their best red-carpet looks forward for that perfect step and repeat photo opportunity. While others, unfortunately, never fail to disappoint us.

Fall Awakening

Dashing Thandie is how we should refer to actress Thandie Newton. This beauty always looks amazing in anything she dons. At the New York City premiere of the movie "W" held at The Ziegfeld Theater on October 14, she took her 'wow' appeal to another level. Sporting a gorgeous one shoulder black dress with ruffle...

Oliver Stone's 'W': Is This Movie Necessary?

October 17th, 2008 9:40am EDT
Turn on any television lately and it is near impossible to avoid the immense amount of political coverage being offered -- which is not necessarily a bad thing, considering the magnitude of this years election. One of the few refuges from the pundits and wonks was the local Cineplex, this all changes this weekend with the release of Oliver Stone's W.

The question is: Is this movie necessary? Well, maybe. It is an interesting dynamic that this movie is being released -- thanks to a rush production job; they started filming in May! -- while George W. Bush is still very much the President...

October 15th, 2008 6:30pm EDT
Josh Brolin
Josh Brolin was under such pressure during his role as George W. Bush in a film of the U.S. president's life, he broke out in hives. The No Country for Old Men star admits he became obsessed with learning Bush's mannerisms for his role in the Oliver Stone biopic W.

The stress of trying to mimic the president's accent caused the itchy skin condition, and infuriated his wife - movie star Diane Lane - because he would talk to himself in public.

Brolin tells USA Today newspaper, "My wife got so mad at me one time. We were on a plane from Hawaii, and I'm supposed to learn all these fra...

Is 40 Dangerous Territory For Men In Hollywood?

October 15th, 2008 12:25pm EDT
George Clooney
There's a saying in Hollywood that goes, when a woman turns 40 her career is over, when a man turns 40 it's just beginning. Sex appeal seems to be the driving force in most stars careers and the perception of most men is that they get sexier with age. Thanks to plastic surgery and changing attitudes women have a fighting chance of keeping their share of the sexy spotlight. But what about the men of Hollywood?

In a not-so-popular film called "I'll Do Anything" Nick Nolte plays an out of work actor who's sleeping with a casting director and lands an audition for a show she's working on. ...

Brolin's Crotch Grabbing Catches On

October 14th, 2008 9:05am EDT
Josh Brolin
Oliver Stone has some great outtakes for the DVD release of his new George W. Bush biopic W. - his lead Josh Brolin insisted his co-stars break up serious scenes by flipping off the director and grabbing their crotches.

Even British actress Thandie Newton, who plays Condoleezza Rice in the movie, tapped into her inner testosterone to play along with the boys.

Brolin explains, "It's my whole motif in this movie. Between each take, I would grab my balls and flip off the camera. By the end, the whole cabinet (co-stars) - Colin Powell (Jeffrey Wright), (Paul) Wolfowitz (Dennis Boutsik...

Oliver Stone Says Bar Incident Was Racial

October 10th, 2008 12:41pm EDT
Oliver Stone
Moviemaker Oliver Stone has hinted the summer bar brawl that landed his W stars Josh Brolin and Jeffrey Wright behind bars was racially charged. The director was with the two actors in Shreveport, Louisiana when both were cautioned and then arrested by local police for being drunk and disorderly during a fracas outside the Stray Cat bar.

Wright and Brolin have maintained their innocence and now Stone suggests the fight started after a bartender took a dislike to African-American Wright— and the whole thing was handled by "insane" cops.

He tells the new issue of Men's Journal magaz...

'W' Fails To Impress Critics

October 8th, 2008 3:32pm EDT
W= Fail
Oliver Stone's filmmaking skills have come under question after a series of noted movie critics were left unimpressed by his eagerly anticipated George W. Bush biopic, W.

The JFK moviemaker rushed to shoot and edit the film so it could open in cinemas throughout the U.S. before the forthcoming presidential elections in November. And some of the industry's most respected film critics have taken aim at Stone for doing so - with one writer claiming the quality of the rush job is no better than a made-for-TV movie.

According to Britain's The Times newspaper, the subject matter - Bus...

Oliver Stone Defends Movie Against 'Scared' Critics

May 20th, 2008 11:50am EDT
Oliver Stone
Director Oliver Stone has defended his forthcoming George W. Bush biopic against critics, insisting they are scared of taking on the U.S. president themselves.

Stone fought a battle convincing Hollywood to help him make W, his highly critical appraisal of Bush - claiming too many people feared making a stand against the current government.

And he claims media critics are running scared too: "When push comes to shove, all these media companies are chickens - they're all part of conglomerates."
