Tom Cruise To Replace Hugh Jackman As 'Van Helsing'

May 1st, 2012 7:43pm EDT
Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise is set to replace Hugh Jackman as the titular character in a new Van Helsing film.

Jackman took on the role of vigilante monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing in the hit 2004 horror film but it appears Cruise will be now taking over in a "re-imagining" of the franchise.

Universal Studios bosses have signed a two-year deal with Transformers screenwriting duo Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci, who will pen a new script and Cruise is already attached to star and produce.

The original film also featured Kate Beckinsale. It is not known if she will return for the new movie.

When Good Actors Do Bad Movies

August 7th, 2009 9:20am EDT
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Entering theatres with a torrent of bad buzz, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" has all the makings of a big-time flop - not necessarily a shock given the thin source material.

What is surprising, however, is the appearance of indie stalwart and critically acclaimed actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role of Cobra Commander. It's not the kind of fare he's normally associated with, but he isn't the first good actor to show up in a bad, bad film.

Why does this happen? There are myriad reasons, but these are the most popular:

Material temptation: It's not easy turning down a $20 million ...

'G.I. Joe' - The Latest In A Long Line Of Mediocre, Nostalgia Mining Blockbusters

August 5th, 2009 9:55am EDT
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
It's been over a month since Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen raked in $62 million on its opening day. Michael Bay's second installment to the Transformers series went on to make much more than that, currently cashing in over $796 million worldwide. Despite a phenomenal performance in the box office, Revenge of the Fallen was ripped apart by fans and critics alike. Critics balked at the movie’s obtuse premise that stretched for over two hours, while fans cringed at incomprehensible fight scenes, sloppy storytelling and dull characters. Even though Revenge of the Fallen suffered near unan...

August 15th, 2008 9:24am EDT
Kate Beckinsale
Actress Kate Beckinsale is still shocked that critics and film fans have accepted her as an action heroine in films like Underworld and Van Helsing - because she feared she'd be a laughing stock.

The sexy Brit admits she only took on the action roles because they "scared the c**p" out of her - and she always likes an acting challenge. And she's still astonished she pulled the action roles off on the big screen.

She says, "It still amazes me that people actually watching me with a gun didn't just burst out laughing. I can't even play ping-pong, but it turns out I'm good with weap...

Beauty & Brains: The Most Educated Celebrities

April 16th, 2008 9:50am EDT
Natalie Portman
There's nothing better - or more intimidating - than someone with a combination of good looks, lots of money, unbridled talent and intelligence. It's easier to make fun of people like Paris Hilton or Britney Spears, who might possess a few of the aforementioned assets but who are one short of a perfect combination.

But some celebs have it all. Beauty, money, power and an impressive academic pedigree. So here is Starpulse's list of the most erudite celebrities, and some might come as quite a surprise. (Conan O'Brien went to Harvard?)

Ashley Judd may have found critical acclaim for ...

British actress Kate Beckinsale has vowed not to take any more glamorous movie roles - declaring her time as a "sex-bomb" is over. The 34-year-old star began her acting career in Kenneth Branagh's 1993 version of Much Ado About Nothing but graduated to action-packed adventures including Underworld and Van Helsing.

However, Beckinsale is now determined to turn her career around and prove herself as a serious actress. She says, "The sex-bomb thing is totally fun but you want to take the red shoes off sometimes. I've been wanting to do something more dramatic. I don't regret any of my mo...

Supernatural Horror: So Bad It's Good

January 31st, 2008 1:43pm EST
Underworld
A recent conversation involving the short-lived, obscure (but highly entertaining) Fox television series "Werewolf" prompted us to take a closer look at some of the failures peppered throughout the history of supernatural horror in television and film. And there are a lot of them.

The genre has always been somewhat popular (especially in literature), and projects continue to appear on screen with some regularity. Unfortunately, the quality of those productions remains quite low. Sure, there are exceptions. Television shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" and films lik...

April 9th, 2007 10:03am EDT
Kate Beckinsale
English actress Kate Beckinsale is amused by her daughter's reaction to the Botoxed women in Hollywood, because she compares them to Harry Potter baddies. The Van Helsing beauty lives in Los Angeles with director husband Len Wiseman and eight-year-old daughter Lily and is stunned the youngster recognizes Botox treatment on the locals.

She says, "This is what's sick about living in LA. My eight-year-old daughter will point to a woman and say, 'Look! That woman's had too much Botox.'

"She spots them because they all look a bit like Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter."

- Kate Beck...

May 30th, 2006 10:11am EDT
Hugh Jackman
Hugh Jackman has his diver brother to thank for curing his fear of heights as a child. The actor admits he'd never be able to play action heroes in films like X-Men and Van Helsing because his childhood phobia would have crippled him. But, fortunately, his older brother came up with a novel way to help him get over his fears.

Jackman recalls, "I remember spending two months going to the diving board with my brother, which was actually one of the kind things he did when we were younger. He said, 'Right, we are going to do the one-meter board, then the three-meter board and then the 10-...
