Susan Hayward -called in to replace the great Judy Garland on this picture- saves the day with her great performance of the Broadway Star who will do anything to prevent a newcomer to shine. With only 4 scenes Hayward steals the show. Riveting performance. One wonders why 20th and Mark Robson did not add more scenes to Miss Hayward's role in an attempt to save this film. Miss Hayward is a much overlooked actress. Dying at a relatively early age, Hayward's body of work included "Smash Up" "My Foolish Heart" "With A Song In My Heart" "I'll Cry Tomorrow" and her Oscar Winning performance in Robert Wise's searing "I Want To Live". Admired by Hollywood: Garbo called on Susan Hayward just before her death. As did Katharine Hepburn. Barbara Stanwyck was a fan as were Greg Peck, Bill Holden, Duke Wayne, Loretta Young and Debbie Reynodls. Robert Wise said "If Susan Were a European Actress she would sweep the world" Stanwyck, Davis, Garbo, Hepburn, Streep, Crawford are listed as Hollywood's greatest actresses. I think Hayward deserves to be included in that list too. When Susan Hayward returned to her home studio 20th for "Valley of the Dolls" they had a full studio orchestra greet her playing "If You Knew Susie The Way We Know Susie, Oh Oh What A Gal" So True! She was one of the all time greats. A Box Office Powerhouse. When the New York Times originally reviewed this film, they said "Our Old Friend Susan Hayward saves this film acting like Katharine Cornell" | ||

I think it is time for a serious remake of this movie; I only wish I had the money to produce it... Lindsay Lohan as Neely O'Hara, Sheryl Lee Ralph or Angela Bassett as Helen Lawson, Jessica Simpson as Jennifer North and Jennifer Lopez as Anne Welles... | ||
