Up and Down Summary

Utterly forgotten today, George Hernandez, a beefy character actor in the Charles Durning mold, was a popular screen presence in the pre-1920 years. In Up and Down, Hernandez plays Mike, a recently released convict who teams up with Allen Corey (John Gilbert), a young author. Suffering from "writer's block," Allen hits the road with natural-born hobo Mike, hoping to pick up story material along the way. In the course of their westward journey, Allen and Mike stop over at the ranch owned by pretty Esther Hollister (Fritzi Ridgeway). While love blooms between Allen and Esther, Mike decides to provide the hero with enough "material" to last a lifetime by masterminding a series of daring daylight holdups. Somehow, Mike escapes prosecution, and even manages to round up a gang of vicious rustlers, enabling Allen to emerge as the Hero of the Hour. Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
