The 1941 Orson Welles classic - the story of a wealthy young idealist transformed by scandal and vice into a regretful old recluse - was again rated the best movie ever Wednesday by the American Film Institute.

Screen classic West Side Story has topped a poll naming the greatest screen musicals of all time, beating out competition from such favorites as Singin' In The Rain and Mary Poppins. The 1961 movie, which starred Natalie Wood, was scored by Leonard Bernstein. Second place in British newspaper The Observer's poll is Gold Diggers Of 1933.

Singin' In The Rain has topped the American Film Institute's (AFI) list of the 25 Greatest Movie Musicals. The feel-good 1952 Gene Kelly classic beat off competition from Natalie Wood weepie West Side Story and Judy Garland favorite The Wizard Of Oz.
