31 Days Of Horror: 'Saw' (2004)

October 20th, 2010 2:07pm EDT
Saw
Ever since Saw came out way back in 2004, I’ve heard nothing but belly aching from movie-goers and horror-goons alike over how the movie ushered in a new era of gore-porn. That because of Saw, as well as Hostel, its pseudo sister-movie, all horror movies started to forgo any attempt at story telling in favor of graphic depictions of peoples’ heads getting shoved into bear-traps or corn threshers. I also recall it being quite buzzed about before its release, only to be met with cold to tepid reviews upon its actual release. So, keeping its reputation in mind, I skipped past watching Saw, Saw...

Spain Drops X-Rating On 'Saw VI'

August 4th, 2010 12:12am EDT
Saw VI
Horror movie "Saw VI" will finally be released in Spain this October after producers cut several of the gory sequel's most violent scenes to secure a more universal rating in the country.

The sixth installment of the popular franchise was slapped with an X rating by Spanish film censors last year, meaning it could only be shown in theatres which allowed porn.

Its release in Spain was postponed and "Saw VI's" producers went back to the cutting room to re-edit the release.

They have now adhered to the rules set out by officials at the film institute, a unit of the culture ministry, who dem...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Saw VI,' 'Vampire's Assistant' & More

October 19th, 2009 9:43am EDT
Cirque du Freak
Last Tuesday, I had a chance to see "Where the Wild Things Are." Visually the film is stunning; it integrates handheld camera shots in the appropriate moments to take viewers into the action. Jim Henson's Creature Shop makes the monsters of the movie look incredibly convincing, and the composite animation of their faces matches up well.

Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers do a fantastic job of stretching a 10 page children's book into a movie that doesn't distort the message of the book, but still gives audiences something fresh. One of the most fascinating aspects of the creatures the hero M...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies 7/26/09 - 8/1/09

July 27th, 2009 1:56pm EDT
Funny People
The column formerly known as "This Week's Movie Buzz" has a new name: "Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies." Fear not dear readers, the structure of the article you know and love will not be changing at all.

At Starpulse, we decided to change the name because we believe "Trailer Talk" more accurately reflects the column's subject matter. The insight and advice that I provide you on a weekly basis is based primarily on my viewing of movie trailers.

I do not have a chance to see most of the films before I actually recommend them to you. That being said, I do give confirmation if I ...

As October 31st draws near, there is only one thing that matters to those of us who are too old for trick-or-treating: Horror movies. This year, we have once again been blessed by a sequel from the Saw series, Leigh Whanell's gory little idea that could. In honor of the Saw V premiere, here are our top traps/deaths from the first four "Saw" movies. "Saw V" has been excluded from this list to avoid spoiling anything for those of you who have not yet seen the latest installment.

Meagan Good: Does She Need A Make-Up Make Over?

October 24th, 2008 12:49pm EDT
Megan Good
Meagan Good showed up to the Los Angeles premiere of Saw V with largely arched penciled-in eyebrows and puffy lips. In our opinion, a beautiful woman like her doesn't need to do so much plucking and puffing.

Ten Underrated Thrillers

October 17th, 2008 10:12am EDT
The Descent
Horror movies are some of the most consistent pieces of the film industry. Sure there have been highs and lows in the genre, and resurgences have come and gone, but one thing remains true: people will always yearn for those cinematic chills.

The demand, however big it may be, is always constant. The golden age of cinema through the 60s brought on big studio monster movies, sly noir thrillers, and of course, Hitchcockian suspense (a subgenre, respectively). The 1970s, arguably the paramount epoch of cinema, period, saw the expansion of the genre and gave filmgoers some of the best nail...
