Running Review
Running would be better off if it were solely about its title subject, for the moments that work the best in the film are those that deal honestly with the joys and challenges associated with becoming a runner. Unfortunately, there are also a number of moments that deal with this same subject dishonestly -- such as picturing the hero running fully clothed to work rather than in a running outfit -- which negate some of the more truthful moments. What is even more problematic is that when the film stops concentrating on running and tries to deal with what passes for drama, it falls into trite clichés. The enterprise begins to feel like a pale imitation of Rocky in running shoes, with all of the hokum and too little of the sincerity that made the boxing picture work. Michael_Douglas certainly does his best, and his performance is the finest thing in the film. He manages to make gripping moments that would otherwise sag, and he's often compelling. Unfortunately, he's also a bit too strong a presence at times, working against the feeling that this man really is a loser. The direction is average, although some of the running sequences are shot quite effectively. Craig Butler, Rovi
