The Golden Age Of Black Talent In Hollywood

March 2nd, 2010 10:05am EST
Are Black Men The Dominant Leading Actors Of This Era
Hollywood has always had its share of big-name black talent, from Sidney Poitier to Hattie McDaniel to Louis Gossett, Jr. But looking back, none of those big names owned Hollywood like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, or Audrey Hepburn did. Poitier, McDaniel, and Gossett, Jr. were immensely talented pioneers, but they were vastly outnumbered by their peers in the industry. Unfortunate as it was, they were the exception in Hollywood, not the rule.

This was probably due in part to the social fabric of America at the time. It can’t have been easy for Sidney Poitier, even with his incredible tal...

Guy Ritchie's 'Sherlock Holmes' Will 'Deliver And Surprise People'

July 22nd, 2009 10:40am EDT
Sherlock Holmes
Guy Ritchie has enjoyed a cult following in America for his British gangster flicks like Snatch and Rocknrolla. He's been more famous for his marriage to, and divorce from, Madonna. This Christmas, everyone will know his directing skills. His Sherlock Holmes film is likely to get noticed for its own merits.

"I hope so," said producer Susan Downey, wife of Sherlock actor Robert Downey, Jr. "He did an amazing job, on a scale that no one's seen him work on before. He delivered. I think it's going to surprise people."

Ritchie's British films were characterized by kinetic violence and flas...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

The Ugly Truth
Last Tuesday I had the opportunity to catch "Dead Snow" on Demand, and it was everything I hoped it would be. To enjoy the film though you truly need to suspend your disbelief, because if Nazi zombies are not enough, there are tons of really ridiculous, impossible events that occur.

This self-aware horror film makes many hilarious references both directly and indirectly to other movies of the genre. Characters are incredibly cliché and the dialogue is woefully written, but it is an action packed gore-fest featuring some of the most delightfully brutal horror movie deaths.

Comedies d...

Hyper-Masculine Action Films Are Violent, Ridiculous & So Much Fun

April 15th, 2009 12:52pm EDT
Fast & Furious
According to Hollywood and its demographic cinema box office soothsayers, the only people who have the ability to purchase tickets to and actively watch an action film are men and teenage boys. They believe that women, for the most part, cannot watch these films - unless their boyfriends, husbands, male friends, etc. have explicitly gave them entrance to the theater or made the magical DVD player start the film.

Either way, it is assumed that men are the ones with the keys to the magic that is "boom and vroom." Hollywood types with these lofty gendered assumptions are most definite...

Rocknrolla
"I own this town." But owning is getting expensive for old-school London gangster Lenny Cole (Tom Wilkinson). A wealthier foreign mob is moving in with a riverfront property swindle. A small-timer (Gerard Butler) and his crew think they can play both sides and become big time.

Now add a hard-as-ice accountant (Thandie Newton), a rocker playing dead to boost sales, wannabe music moguls (Jeremy Piven and Chris Bridges), a missing painting and a mad mosh of money and muscle, and you've got a real RocknRolla.

From Guy Ritchie (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch) comes a ...
