'The Artist' & 'Hugo' Top Oscars With Five Wins Each (Full List Of Academy Award Winners)

Tom Hanks, who ended last year's Academy Awards by announcing Best Picture winner The King's Speech, started things off at this year's Oscars by handing out the evening's first two awards, for Best Cinematography and Best Art Direction. Both awards went to Martin Scorsese's 3D family film Hugo, quickly setting the tone for a possible upset in the coveted Best Picture category at the end of the ceremony.

But that wasn't to be, as frontrunner The Artist took most of the night's major awards, including Best Picture, Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Director (Michel Hazanavicius).

'Rango' Sweeps The 2012 VES Awards

Johnny Depp's animated Western Rango was the runaway winner at the 10th annual Visual Effects Society (VES) Awards on Tuesday after scooping four trophies.

The film, in which Depp voiced a chameleon stranded in the Mojave Desert, was honored for its outstanding visual effects, animated character (Rango), created environment and virtual cinematography.

Meanwhile, Martin Scorsese's Oscar contender Hugo nabbed two awards including outstanding supporting visual effects and virtual cinematography.

The Help and The Artist dominated the Critics' Choice Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday night, scooping the event's top prizes.

The film about the treatment of black maids in 1960s America landed three of the coveted acting honors, including a Best Actress prize for Viola Davis, while her co-star Octavia Spencer picked up the night's first award, Best Supporting Actress.

Terrence Malick's complex The Tree Of Life has been handed another honor - officials at the Online Film Critics Society have named the movie their Best Picture of the Year.

The film, starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn, picked up seven awards on Monday, including Best Director for Malick, Best Supporting Actress for Chastain and Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezski.

'Hop' Rules Weekend Box Office

Russell Brand's new family comedy "Hop" has jumped to the top of the box office with an opening weekend $38.1 million take.

The Easter-themed movie, in which the British funnyman voices a bunny character, matched the year's best debut so far - for Johnny Depp's Rango.

Ironically, Brand presented Depp with the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Award for Best Movie Actor on Saturday night.

Aaron Eckhart's alien war movie Battle: Los Angeles has invaded the box office chart to debut at number one.

The sci-fi action film, which also stars Michelle Rodriguez and singer-turned-actor Ne-Yo as Marines, grossed $36 million in its opening weekend.

It also proved popular outside of America, taking $16.7 million from 33 global markets, boosting its worldwide haul to just under $53 million.

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp's animated western Rango performed well in its second week on release with $23 million, while Red Riding Hood entered at three, grossing $14.1 million.

Anti-smoking campaigners are rallying against Johnny Depp's animated movie Rango, branding the film a health hazard for depicting smoking on screen.

The movie, which features the voices of Depp, Isla Fisher and Bill Nighy, follows a group of chameleons searching for water that has been stolen from a town called Dirt. Throughout the film "at least 60 instances of characters smoking" have been counted, according to Kori Titus, CEO of non-profit organisation Breathe California.
