'Lawless' And The Top 10 Prohibition Era Crime Films

August 29th, 2012 3:07pm EDT
Lawless
Lawless follows a long tradition in Hollywood of portraying mobsters during their heydey, when they were relied on to keep America inebriated during prohibition. This list of top prohibition crime films includes flicks from the past 80 years - and here they are:

10. Bugsy (1991): This take on Bugsy Siegel's life isn't 100% accurate, but it does offer an interesting view of the evolution of mobsters when they moved west to Nevada and California to take advantage of gambling and the film industry. It received 11 Academy Award nominations, but only won 2.

9. The Public Enemy (1931): A...

July 14th, 2010 2:54pm EDT
Marion Cotillard
Marion Cotillard may not be a household name in the United States, but she should be. The French actress showed up to the "Inception" Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday looking lovely in a long, slim fitting navy blue gown.

She has starred in the films "Nine," "Public Enemies," "A Good Year" and "La vie en rose," for which she won a Best Actress Oscar and Golden Globe award.

Fun facts about Marion:

-Her father was a mime.
-She is a member of Greenpeace.
-She once said, "Did a man really walk on the moon? I saw plenty of documentaries on it, and I really wondered. And in any case I don't bel...

25 Top Movies Of 2009 (So Far)

November 26th, 2009 9:44am EST
2009
As with every year there are dozens of great movies but there are even more really bad ones. 2009 will be marked by Quentin Tarantino and Sacha Baron Cohen comebacks along with a bevy of bad movies, highlighted by Megan Fox's performance in Jennifer's Body. There were plenty of good movies and we may have the most fun making fun of the bad and helpless ones, but let's take a look at the best movies of 2009.

Most blockbuster movies are filled with overrated stars (i.e. Will Smith and Tom Cruise) and are seemingly contrived, made only to make money. Thankfully this year there were not as ...

Is Excessive CGI And No Plot Becoming A Trend In Movies?

Transformers 2
A few weeks ago I got to see 15 minutes of James Cameron's "Avatar" on the IMAX in 3D, and it was some of the best CGI ever seen on the big screen. For years Cameron has promised a big comeback and at least visually this movie looks like it will truly deliver when it comes out in December. And yet ... what little they revealed of the plot felt contrived, and the dialogue was stiff. A soldier sneaking undercover in another society and then falling in love with this new culture and trying to make peace between the two nations. Viewers have seen that before, but what makes "Avatar" different h...

Summer Movie Awards Part 1: Surprise Hit, Biggest Bombs & More

G.I. Joe
Now that Labor Day has come and gone, the official end to summer has now passed. Yes, the days will now be shorter, the weather cooler (unless you're smart enough to live in Southern California like this column's scribe), and for some school resuming its session, but there's also a lot of good news.

TV is back, football is back, and summer movie season is finally at its end. Yes, no more summer movies, no more endless weekends filled with event films that shatter theater speakers and routinely melt screens with too much rambunctious action. It's a thankful end to a season that routine...

Sarah's Cinema Musings: This Summer's Hits & Misses

The Ugly Truth
Ok, we are almost through the summer season of film, and I, for one, feel like I am trying to resuscitate an almost dead corpse. Sure, there were hits, good films, and technical blockbuster hits, but were they really great or just great within their summer context?

The Blockbusters

Just because a movie generates revenue at the box office does not necessarily translate into a successful well-loved film. X-Men Origins: Wolverine for instance, didn't exactly start the season off with a bang. Star Trek was loved by both fans and non-fans; something that was a bit of a worry before th...

Summer is the season for blockbuster movie premiere madness; and, where there are movie premieres one can expect to see great fashion as well. One fanciful lady on the red carpet during the UK premiere of the movie 'Public Enemies' on June 29th, was French actress and one of the stars of the movie, Marion Cotillard. Her very svelte frock was eye catching indeed. Ooh la la!

The Outfit: A Vivienne Westwood strapless red dress made out of satin, with a corset bust line.

Sassy Factor: The cutout neckline of the dress which lends to an ultra femme appearance.

Accessories: Love ...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

Bruno
Last week, I chose to see "Public Enemies," which is a decision I definitely do not regret. Johnny Depp is electric as John Dillinger, oozing the charm and finesse of the real life American bank robber and folk hero. Christian Bale also does a solid job as the FBI agent Melvin Purvis, a man singularly obsessed with catching Dillinger.

My main complaints are that the movie does not develop the roles of the other gangsters very well, and at points that the cinematography leaves something to be desired. There are some really shaky handheld shots, which are nauseating. Other than that, ...

Sarah's Cinema Musings: Do Film Critics Matter?

July 3rd, 2009 10:50am EDT
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Posing this question is damning because I critique films and other productions, but it is relevant. This past week, after the release of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Public Enemies, the issue of film critics came to a particularly strong head. I do not read film reviews. This is something that happens during the process of studying film. As we critics-in-training collected credit hours watching and analyzing countless "art" films and auteur films (and drooled over the likes of Francois Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock), we got swelled heads, thinking we knew best.

Johnny Depp Thrills Sick Kids With Captain Jack Visit

Johnny Depp thrilled sick children at a London hospital on Wednesday by dropping in unannounced, dressed as a pirate.

The actor has been in the U.K. capital this week to promote new movie Public Enemies, and took time out from his busy schedule to visit Great Ormond Street Hospital to cheer up young patients.

Dressed as his Pirates Of The Caribbean character Captain Jack Sparrow, he visited several wards - including the one his daughter Lily-Rose stayed in when she was treated for kidney failure in 2007.

A source tells WENN, "Johnny was so friendly with all the children on the ward...

Will 'Public Enemies' With Christian Bale And Johnny Depp Make The Top Gangster Movie List?

Public Enemies
It's hard to draft this kind of list with "Public Enemies" so close to reaching its port of call at your local theater, since it's bound to shake the list up a bit. But so far as it goes, the Mob genre has a few golden standards that have set the bar high enough to make any director quake in their concrete boots at the prospect of taking the plunge. These films have a built-in mechanism that causes them either to take complete control of the empire or erupt like a car bomb. It's the requirement for these movies to champion the 'bad guy' as the hero of the film, casting them in a sympathetic...

Johnny Depp's Best & Worst Films - Do You Agree?

The problem with an actor like Johnny Depp is finding movies in his history that aren't fantastic. Then you have to consider the movies that aren't that good, but that he was great in anyway (which covers basically everything else).

The truth is, this Kentucky-born actor is one of the best in his or anyone's generation, and he also is an accomplished producer, director, screenwriter, and yes, even has quite a set of singing pipes. Good thing he's just so unattractive or he might just be the perfect Hollywood hunk ... oh wait. He's gorgeous. Damn you, Johnny Depp!

I saw "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" last week, and I really enjoyed it. Apparently among critics I was in the minority on that one. The film certainly wasn't perfect, but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as people were saying.

The surprising thing for me though, was how divided people's opinions were about it. For the most part I found that people who viewed the film fell into two camps: those that loved it and those that hated it. I didn't really encounter a many people who fell in between.

July starts out a bit slow this week with "Public Enemies," "Ice Age: Dawn of...
