'Resident Evil' Wins Weekend Box Office & 'The Master' Breaks Cinema Records

"Resident Evil: Retribution," the fifth installment of the zombie thriller series based on the popular video game franchise, debuted at number one at the weekend box office. The film, starring Milla Jovovich, grossed $21.1 million.

In second place was "Finding Nemo 3D," a reformatted version of the 2003 animated movie. The film took in $17.5 million. Last week's number one, horror film "The Possession," slipped to number three with $6 million.

Not many people go to the movies this time of year as evidenced by the latest box office numbers. Creepy thriller "The Possession" topped the weekend box office for the second weekend in a row taking in a mere $9.5 million.

Inspired by Los Angeles Times writer Leslie Gornstein's article "A Jinx in a Box," "The Possession" stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick. It tells the tale of a broken family that comes under attack from a malevolent supernatural entity of Jewish folklore.

Teenage actress Natasha Calis was "freaking out" on the set of creepy new horror movie The Possession after she was forced to film a scene sitting in the dark covered in moths.

The young star portrays Emily Brenek, a girl who becomes possessed by a demon after her father, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, buys her an ancient box at a neighborhood sale, and her most disturbing scene came when she had to face her fear of the winged insects.

Supernatural Thriller 'The Possession' Wins Weak Labor Day Box Office

Spooky new movie The Possession has scared up a dream debut at the top of the U.S. box office with a $17 million-plus Labor Day weekend take.

The supernatural horror movie, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick as parents to a demonic child, raked in almost $10 million more than Shia LaBeouf's star-studded new period gangster film Lawless, which debuted at two.

Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables 2 fell to three after two weeks at the top of the chart.

The Bourne Legacy and ParaNorman round out the new top five.

Actress Kyra Sedgwick was extra spooked while shooting new horror film The Possession because it is based on a true story.

The movie centers around a little girl named Em, who goes to a yard sale and buys an antique box, which turns out to be haunted by an evil spirit.
