In Hollywood where many are called Stars and too often too many tabbed Legends, this film stars two bona fide stars and legends, Kate Hepburn and Henry Fonda. The movie is a tale of a family reunion in New Hampshire with a cranky Dad (Henry Fonda) and his rebellious daughter ( Jane Fonda) coming to terms of mortality. The anchor of all this is Miss Katharine Hepburn, Connecticut Yankee to her fingertips. Jane Fonda produced this movie and one of the great all time momemts in film comes towards the end when the Fonda's have a scene said to parrallel their own off streen tension. It works beautfully. This picture was Jane Fonda's valentine of love to her Dad the peerless actor Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda won the Oscar and was too ill to accept so Jane Fonda accepted. Miss Hepburn won her 4th Oscar (a still standing record) for her lovely portrayal of a woman still in love with her Husband after so many years. Two interesting notes.. 1. The Film was based on a Broadway play produced by another legend Greer Garson who wanted also to play the Ethel role in the Film. (As did Barbara Stanwyck) 2. And the hat Fonda wears in this movie was a prop...given to him by Kate Hepburn who said it was Spencer Tracy's...the tactiturn Fonda wept when he received it. A great movie and the scenes of Summertime in New England are very beautiful. Kudos to Director Mark Rydell did a good job here. | ||
