Review: Sci-Fi Cinema Did It Better Before 'Oblivion'

April 20th, 2013 10:02am EDT
Olga Kurylenko and Tom Cruise in Oblivion
Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi flick “Oblivion” is like the South Park episode “Simpsons Already Did It,” where Butters tries to cause havoc, and is continually foiled when he learns that “The Simpsons did it!” first. With Kosinski’s film though, you might say, “Cinema did it!” repeatedly after the introduction of each well-traveled science fiction theme in the movie.

In “Oblivion,” Jack (Tom Cruise) is one of the last remaining people on an Earth scorched by war with alien invaders. Mankind is colonizing a new home, so most humans are preparing for the voyage, on a giant space station orbitin...

Forgotten Friday Flick - 'Moon'

Moon
With the space dud and copycat flick "Oblivion" hitting theaters this weekend it seems a perfect time to go back to the film it borrowed from most.  Only instead of a weak one and a half stars it’s five-star stuff...Welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Not going back too far, we’re heading to 2009 for a little film that said so much.  An unusual outer space tale that focused much more on the human condition and less on mindless space spectacle.  Featuring a career making performance and announcing the arrival of a new and unique voice from the filmmaking front lines we’re gladly heading to.....

Review 'Oblivion': An Engrossing Sci-Fi Thriller That Won't Leave You Oblivious

April 19th, 2013 7:27am EDT
Oblivion
After not seeing a movie for almost three weeks, Two Jews On Film are back and once again and disagreeing.

Our first film, since leaving the beach for the mountains, is 'Oblivion' directed by Joseph Kosinski, based on his unpublished graphic novel.

This sci-fi visually spectacular action movie stars Tom Cruise as Jack Harper, a super pilot, super lover and all round 'super guy.'

The year is 2077 and life on Earth is non-existent. Sixty years ago some really nasty aliens, known as the Scavengers, destroyed our moon - no moon plus no water and no food equates to: not a good thing at al...

Review: Eye Candy Only Thing That Saves 'Oblivion'

April 18th, 2013 3:02pm EDT
Oblivion
In the sci-fi world depth is as common as bread and butter when it comes to memorable storytelling.  Within the realm of futuristic surrealism lies limitless possibilities of twists and turns for a great writer to spin a yarn.  Unfortunately the way in over its head "Oblivion" takes the above sentiments too literally and turns out one of the busiest, yet dull, convoluted and all out copycat flicks I’ve seen since the days of Roger Corman.

Jack Harper is a tech who is one of the last few humans on earth.  After an unsuccessful alien invasion over sixty years ago that destroyed the moon and...

5 Things You Need To Know About 'Oblivion'

April 18th, 2013 11:30am EDT
Oblivion
The sci-fi flick 'Oblivion' starring Tom Cruise hits theatres in the U.S. this weekend. The movie has made some noise overseas, where it made some $61 million (half the film's budget) in its first weekend. In anticipation of its big opening, here are five things you need to know about 'Oblivion.'

1. Not an adaptation of David Foster Wallace's short story collection, Oblivion

No, Oblivion isn't John Krasinki's follow-up to his adaptation of David Foster Wallace's Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. An Oblivion adaptation would be harder than Brief Interviews with Hideous Man. Oblivion, the ...

Matt Damon Suits Up To Save The Earth In 'Elysium' - Watch The Trailer

April 10th, 2013 11:15am EDT
Elysium
From the director of 'District 9' comes 'Elysium,' another futuristic tale of the feud between two separate societies. The story follows Max Coburn (played by Matt Damon), who for reasons unknown needs to go to 'Elysium,' a futuristic paradise in space.

The movie shares some things in common with "District 9" - high society completely distanced from the masses, with the plebeians living in squalor on Earth (which has completely fallen into disrepair) and the aristocracy living on Elysium - an enormous utopian society created on a ring in space.

Apparently, director Neill Blomkamp is very ...

After Earth
Much to my elation, it seems that the sci-fi machine in Hollywood has once again turned on, as some seriously awesome movie trailers were released over this past week. It looks like 2013 will be a promising year for Sci-Fi fans, especially those who like space-ships, big robots, forsaken planets, alien-dinosaurs, Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Guillermo del Toro, love stories, ethical dilemmas and mindless, awesome, explosions and epic battle scenes. Oh wait - THATS JUST ABOUT EVERYONE.

"After Earth" stars the father-son douo, Will and Jaden Smith. The Smiths have nev...
