Are Film Remakes Worth The Risk?

October 8th, 2009 10:37am EDT
Fame
In these tough economic times, film studios are producing more and more remakes. Though some cite the financial insecurity of the viewing public, many simply argue that there is just no originality anymore, and why take a risk on a "new" idea when you can simply bring back what has since become a cult classic?

All films can be considered risks, however, especially when "date night" at the movies takes a middle class couple's expendable income. Not one of the top 10 films at the box office this summer was a remake. Perhaps that is because these new-old movies have versions sitting on Blo...

While Hollywood has staked out late May, June and July as prime summer movie territory, August has gotten lost in the shuffle. August isn't as big of a dump month as September or January, but you usually don't find studios queuing up to put their surefire tent pole smashes there.

With summer winding down, younger audiences are turning their attentions back to school, families are getting in one final vacation, and cooler weather in some regions are all valid reasons why studios feel like box office for their mega-budgeted pictures would be affected by an August release.

Which leaves...

If you move on from the films you've made - which I have tried always to move on - then it's like, 'That's in the past. It's had his life.'
