Based on the relationship between Queen Victoria of England and her horseman, Mrs. Brown is significant for introducing two of Britain's finest stage performers to mainstream America. As the Queen, Judi_Dench turns in a finely controlled performance, perfectly balanced between tenderness and steely determination. Best-known for stand-up comedy routines and hilarious appearances on English talk shows, Billy_Connolly surprised many with his fine dramatic turn as the Queen's scandalous new friend. Dench was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in this film and became something of a hot property in Hollywood; director John_Madden would go on to even greater success with 1998's Shakespeare in Love. A production of the same story starring Sean_Connery and Elizabeth_Taylor was scrapped in the late 1960s because it was "discouraged" by the royal family. Brendon Hanley, Rovi
