Forgotten Friday Flick - 'Moon'

April 19th, 2013 1:50pm EDT
Moon
With the space dud and copycat flick "Oblivion" hitting theaters this weekend it seems a perfect time to go back to the film it borrowed from most.  Only instead of a weak one and a half stars it’s five-star stuff...Welcome to Forgotten Friday Flick!  Not going back too far, we’re heading to 2009 for a little film that said so much.  An unusual outer space tale that focused much more on the human condition and less on mindless space spectacle.  Featuring a career making performance and announcing the arrival of a new and unique voice from the filmmaking front lines we’re gladly heading to.....

Summer Movie Awards Part 1: Surprise Hit, Biggest Bombs & More

September 9th, 2009 9:53am EDT
G.I. Joe
Now that Labor Day has come and gone, the official end to summer has now passed. Yes, the days will now be shorter, the weather cooler (unless you're smart enough to live in Southern California like this column's scribe), and for some school resuming its session, but there's also a lot of good news.

TV is back, football is back, and summer movie season is finally at its end. Yes, no more summer movies, no more endless weekends filled with event films that shatter theater speakers and routinely melt screens with too much rambunctious action. It's a thankful end to a season that routine...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

June 22nd, 2009 10:10am EDT
Transformers 2
I got the chance to see "Moon," this past weekend and I really enjoyed it. Sam Rockwell's interaction between the cloned versions of himself was brilliant, and Kevin Spacey was entertaining as the lunar station's computer.

The movie's effects were rock solid and the music was great. My only real complaints were its slow pace, and that I felt the reasons why he was being cloned weren't adequately explained.

This week we have the arrival of another highly anticipated summer blockbuster: "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." I will be seeing it tonight, and I'm anxious to see how ...

'Moon' Brings Philosophical Questions To Movie-Watchers

June 12th, 2009 3:58pm EDT
Moon
Amid the summer movie madness - heavy on special effects and light on storytelling - Moon is ready to offer audience members a healthy dose of reality. But there's one catch: Moon is a science-fiction flick, which makes that previous statement a bit of an oxymoron.

Director Duncan Jones, son of music icon David Bowie and self-described sci-fi geek, set out to create a sort of throwback to earlier sci-fi films like Blade Runner and Outlander, which didn't revolve around mystifying movie-goers with scene after scene of gaudy special effects.

"There are unquestionably less of those kind ...

Best Space Movies

June 12th, 2009 9:53am EDT
Moon
The subject of space is a difficult one in terms of selecting films. Qualifying elements are somewhat subjective. Does the film have to take place in space? Must it include aliens? Does a mere reference to space, or different planets, make it a "space" film? In short, is it merely a subgenre of science fiction? Space and science fiction, while not mutually exclusive, can occur without the other.

In celebration of the release of one of the newest and most promising space films, Moon, check out a brief list of our favorite space films. What you will find below is a mix of films t...

Imagine That
Following up from last week, "The Hangover" turned out to be a hilarious movie. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. I liked it so much that I actually ended up seeing it twice. For a more in-depth discussion of the movie, feel free to check out my review.

This week there are four movies premiering - two thrillers, a comedy, and a drama. We have "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," "Moon," "Imagine That," and "Tetro."

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3

In this remake of the 1974 film, "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" a New York City subway dispatcher named Walter Garber (D...

Starpulse's Explosive Summer Movie Preview

May 1st, 2009 10:06am EDT
Star Trek
Since the dawn of the American cinematic blockbuster in the late 1970s and early 1980s, moviegoers have eagerly waited for May - the unofficial beginning of summertime. This summer is no different. Films, and most popular media, are social mirrors, and this summer season supports that. The large box office contenders all deal with very similar themes: escapism and the support of the lone, outlaw hero figure (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Up, Transformers 2, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Inglourious Basterds, et...
