Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Water For Elephants,' 'Madea's Big Happy Family' & More

April 18th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Water for Elephants
This weekend I was finally able to see the Duncan Jones sci-fi/thriller “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. After viewing it though, I’m fairly certain that Hollywood is attempting to compensate for mindless action flicks, by making ludicrously complex and confusing sci-fi movies like “Source Code.”

While the premise of a lone soldier being forced to travel back in time for 8 minutes at a clip sounds promising, the way that the tale is told, does not allow you to get emotionally invested in the characters.

As he did with his debut film “Moon,” Jones adeptly handles themes of isolat...

What's Next For Tyler Perry? Hopefully Not More Madea!

November 27th, 2010 5:41pm EST
Tyler Perry-AGM-014246.jpg
Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” has come and gone. Like most of his work, it was a critically panned, melodramatic, over the top and frankly annoying piece of cinema, but hey, it still made a boat load of cash. After a film like “For Colored Girls” which saw Perry (sort of) stepping outside of his safety zone, the idea of him going back to “Madea”, seems like a step backwards. What should Tyler Perry do next?

Stop directing. Why? Because since 2005 Perry has directed ten films, all garnering pretty low marks both artistically and technically. These films have been panned for stereotypica...

Writer's Viewpoint: The Overwrought, Weighty Melodrama Of Tyler Perry's Movies Is Abysmal

March 31st, 2009 1:19pm EDT
Madea Goes to Jail
Coming across the occasional blind spot is inevitable in the world of popular culture. You may know everything there is to know about "Lost" but when it comes to talking about Twilight, you're completely clueless. Tyler Perry movies are like that for me. His name floated around in my head for years, but I knew next to nothing about his work. I knew that he was a director and a playwright. I knew that his DVD sales were astronomical. And I knew that all of his movies reminded me of Big Momma's House or Honky Grandma Be Trippin'.

I always assumed that Perry was a bit of a DVD phenomenon ...

July 31st, 2007 6:00pm EDT
Chaka Khan
Say the name "Chaka" and most folks in the know instantly think of a woman who has made an indelible and lasting impression on the music scene of the past three decades. First, as the lead singer of the massively successful R&B, funk and pop band Rufus, then as a solo artist in her own right who has influenced an entire generation of female vocalists (think Mary J. Blige, Erykah Badu, Ledisi, Maysa among others). Like Aretha, like Joni, like Tina, a first name will do. For there's only one Chaka, woman of fire, possessed of a powerhouse, unforgettably distinctive trademark vocal style who ...
