During MGM's Hollywood heyday, even the discovery of radium could seem glamorous. Such is the achievement of Madame Curie, as realized in the performance of Greer_Garson as the famous scientist Marie Curie, with Walter_Pidgeon as her scientist husband Pierre. Garson and Pidgeon had scored earlier with Mrs._Miniver. More historically accurate than most biopics of its time, this 1943 film was directed with customary aplomb by Mervyn_Le_Roy and received seven Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress. Based on a book by the scientists' daughter Eve, the screenplay by Paul_Osborn and Paul H. Rameau combined romance with edification, a sure-fire recipe for success in that era. Michael Betzold, Rovi
