Atonement has won the top prize at the British Academy of Film and Television Awards (BAFTAs) on Sunday, landing the gong for Best Film at the London ceremony.

The Oscar-winning Best Foreign Film is to be remade as a Hollywood movie. German espionage drama The Lives Of Others will be revamped as an English-language film with moviemakers Sydney Pollack and Anthony Minghella coming together for the project.

Oscar-winning director Florian Henckel Von Donnersmarck owes much of his success to California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger - because the Austrian taught him that nothing is impossible. The German moviemaker won Oscar gold last night when his movie The Lives Of Others landed the Best Foreign Film prize at the Academy Awards, and, after thanking Schwarzenegger in his acceptance speech, von Donnersmarck continued to coo about his hero backstage at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Dame Helen Mirren and Forest Whitaker were crowned queen and king of the Oscars last night. The stars of The Queen and The Last King of Scotland won Best Actress and Best Actor respectively, while Martin Scorsese won Best Director for The Departed - his first win out of six nominations in the category and 31 years since his first nomination.
