Best Director - Who Will Win ?

2/24/2013 5:40pm EST
A snub of Ben Affleck in the Best Directing category shows that all signs seem to point toward Steven Spielberg for his brilliant vision of 1860s America and the passing of the 13th Amendment.

But don't count out David O. Russell, whose Silver Linings Playbook just scooped up all the big awards at the Film Independent Spirit Awards last night.

Also in the running are Michael Haneke for his minimalist approach in Amour, taking long camera shots and filming nearly the entire film about an elderly woman's declining health and her loving husband who cares for her in a two-bedroom Paris apartm...

This year's Oscars promises to be full of drama and surprises as there are only a handful of sure locks to win awards.

While Lincoln looked to be a sure bet early on, it wasn't until the Golden Globes that Argo began gaining all of the momentum; scooping up numerous awards, including Producers and Directors Guild Awards.

But that still doesn't mean it'll win Oscar gold. The Producers Guild has ...

Oscar picks 2013
2012 was a great year for films.

We had an old fashioned spaghetti western that blended over the top comedy, violence and the horror of slavery from the always exceptional Quentin Tarrantino ('Django Unchained).

There were several films based on real life events - one that took us on an edge of your seat journey involving the hunt and capture of Osama Bin Laden ('Zero Dark Thirty' - directed by Kathryn Bigelow) and the other...

The rescue of 6 American hostages during the Iran 1979 revolution ('Argo' - directed by Ben Affleck).

Speaking of history, we saw all the manipulations and pol...

Connecticut Congressman Writes Steven Spielberg Over 'Lincoln' Factual Flaw

2/6/2013 8:37pm EST
A Connecticut congressman has a problem with Steven Spielberg's Oscar nominated Lincoln.

Connecticut representative Joe Courtney has written the director in hopes that he changes the film's conclusion. In a roll call vote on the 13th Amendment of the Constitution, which outlaws slavery, two of the three Connecticut delegates voted to instead uphold slavery.

In real life, all of the state's representatives actually voted to abolish slavery. Courtney writes, "I could not believe my own eyes and ears. How could Congressmen from Connecticut - a stat that supported President Lincoln and lost t...

1/25/2013 8:31am EST
Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day-Lewis felt apprehensive about playing a U.S. president in Lincoln because he was convinced the lead role should have been given to an American.

The Gangs of New York star was born and raised in London but also has Irish citizenship because of his father's connections to the country, and he admits his British background made him feel like a fraud for taking on the role of beloved President Abraham Lincoln.

He tells Britain's Daily Mirror newspaper, "I was very aware of the responsibility involved as I didn't want to be the person who desecrated the memory of the most loved pre...

Two Jews On Their Top Ten Films Of 2012

1/6/2013 10:55pm EST
Life of Pi
2012 was a great year for films - studio films as well as Indy titles all scored big.

From the exquisite writing, directing, special effects, I found myself laughing hysterically from a foul mouth, over-sexed pot smoking bear, to a bunch of folks freaking out at the prospect of turning 40.

We had cutting edge performances from Matthew McConaughey ('Killer Joe' & 'The Paper Boy), Nicole Kidman ('The Paper Boy'), John Hawkes and Helen Hunt ('The Sessions') as well as Daniel Day Lewis ('Lincoln') Anthony Hopkins (Hitchcock) and the whole cast of 'Django Unchained'.

As usual, John and I didn...

The Avengers
2012 was a great year for superheroes, James Bond, a former President of the United States and Ben Affleck. What defines a great film? It's different for everyone, but first and foremost it must entertain. Many movies did just that over the past year.

"The Avengers" was the highest grossing film of 2012, earning $623 million in the United States and a staggering $1.5 billion worldwide.

The number-three grossing film of all time (behind James Cameron's "Titanic" and "Avatar"), starred Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo as the H...

Review: 'Lincoln' - Spielberg And Daniel Day-Lewis Do The 16th President Proud

11/9/2012 11:00am EST
I know what some of you may be thinking about Abraham Lincoln. Boring right? Let me assure you this film is anything but boring.

Steven Spielberg has directed a riveting, intense, exciting, fascinating film about our 16th President of the United States – who put everything on the line to pass the 13th amendment to the constitution, which would end slavery throughout the country.

And let me tell you...that was no easy task. Thank goodness Lincoln had anti-slave Congressman Thaddeus Stevenson (Tommy Lee Jones - who's never been better) and Secretary of State William Seward (David Strathai...
