Producer Sam Spiegel and Director David Lean with the backing of Columbia Pictures made the finest film I have ever seen. Some comment is due Mr. Spiegel. A great Independent producer he found a home at Columbia Picture where he made a trio of great classics "On The Waterfront" "River Kwai" and "Lawrence of Arabia" Little wonder Columbia gave him wide latitude in production. His skills of Production on this film is a very important fact in this film being considered one of the greatest films of all time. Steven Speilberg claims it is the movie that made him want to be a filmaker. In performance, Peter O'Toole becomes Lawrence and his performance is one of the all time greats. As happens sometimes the best performance did not win that year but went to the great Greg Peck for his "To Kill Mockingbird"...sometimes there should be a Tie. ( like it was with Hepburn and Streisan...years later the Academy awarded O'Toole with an Honorary Oscar for his many great performances but I think most of all for his work in this magnficent film.) David Lean's mastery of the desert scenes is one of the great accomplishments in cinema. This is a superb film that also brought Omar Sharif to the world and made him an International Movie Star. PS: Was Lawrence of Arabia gay, in l962 things could only be hinted at. Lean did it ever so subtly..there are no real women parts in this movie. All male. Columbia re releases this film on occasion and to see it on the wide screen best | ||
