Hello again readers. After a few weeks off, I’m back with a fresh spin on my column formerly known as Trailer Talk. Even though the name is different, I will still talk about the big movies coming out each week. The advantage will be that I’ll talk about them on Friday instead of Monday, so that if I’ve seen the films, I can actually give you reviews. Opening in theaters today, we have “Lawless,” “The Possession,” and “For a Good Time, Call…”

The film tells the story of the infamous Bondurant brothers, Forrest, (Tom Hardy), Howard (Jason Clarke) and the youngest sibling, Jack (Shia LaBeouf) who made and sold moonshine in the 30's. They lived in...

'Lawless' And The Top 10 Prohibition Era Crime Films

8/29/2012 3:07pm EDT
Lawless follows a long tradition in Hollywood of portraying mobsters during their heydey, when they were relied on to keep America inebriated during prohibition. This list of top prohibition crime films includes flicks from the past 80 years - and here they are:

10. Bugsy (1991): This take on Bugsy Siegel's life isn't 100% accurate, but it does offer an interesting view of the evolution of mobsters when they moved west to Nevada and California to take advantage of gambling and the film industry. It received 11 Academy Award nominations, but only won 2.

9. The Public Enemy (1931): A...

'Lawless' Is A Cold, Stark Punch In The Gut

8/29/2012 9:40am EDT
When it was originally released in 1932, Howard Hawks’ film Scarface was slapped with the subtitle The Shame of the Nation by the MPAA because they felt the story glamorized the gangster lifestyle. Hollywood has had a love affair with gangsters, outlaws, drug dealers and renegades since the earliest days of filmmaking and audiences have been shown literally hundreds of examples of how dangerous that lifestyle can really be.

Lawless, directed by John Hillcoat, tells the story of Bondurant brothers who, at the height of the Great Depression, are operating an extremely lucrative moonshine ope...
