My Grade (C+). I enjoyed myself, for the most part. Jamie Foxx is about as smooth as a sheet of sandpaper. This guy is awful and bland. He's got that "deer in the headlights" look down to a science. But, Gerard Butler is solid in a role that is ideal for his talents. "Law Abiding Citizen" is very tame for an R-Rated film. The language is very salty and that's about it. Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is a upstanding family man, who becomes bloodthirsty and callous when high-profile prosecutor, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx) takes the low road and accepts a plea deal from one of the robbers in exchange for his testimony against his partner in crime. One of the two men murdered the wife and daughter of Clyde Shelton during a home invasion robbery. Clyde becomes enraged and goes to great lengths to teach Nick a lesson. He wants to bring the corrupt, diseased, rotten justice system crashing down on Nick's head. The teachable lessons shifts into gear ten years later. Nick Rice has a daughter, the man who confessed to the murders is out of prison, and Nick's sexy assistant, Sarah Lowell (Leslie Bibb) is a tough, focused young woman. Clyde lures the murderer of his wife and daughter into a doozy of a death trap that ends very badly for the boss of the two-man gang. Clyde plays Nick Rice like a fiddle throughout the movie. Clyde's murky background and connections to the warehouse where he tortured the murdering goon, leads to his arrest. We find out that Clyde has been a busy little bee during his down time. Reading law books is just one of the many things that he occupied his days and nights with. Clyde is a tough nut to crack. Diabolical and gruesome deaths is causing widespread panic in Philadelphia. Nick's team of government officials are doing their damndest to bring closure to this case. Director F. Gary Gray sucks every ounce of juice out of a very thin plot. You see, everyone connected to the case knows that Clyde is going on a killing spree, but they need hard evidence for a conviction. Clyde Shelton is in prison because he wants to be there. His confrontation with Judge Laura Burch (Annie Corley) at his bail hearing is a laugh out loud moment. Sarah's boyfriend is the man behind the scenes , who cracks the code for the newly appointed District Attorney. Nick can thank Clyde and The Mayor for this esteemed honor. "Law Abiding Citizen" takes a turn for the worse after the gripping funeral scene for his fallen comrades turns out to be another death trap. Jamie Foxx cannot carry a movie; being a headliner just isn't in his blood. The climax is disjointed and flat. Not even the great Colm Meaney (Det. Dunnigan) and The Mayor (Viola Davis) can dig Jamie out of his grave of aloofness. "Law Abiding Citizen" would have received a higher grade if the final 25 minutes wasn't completely unwatchable and Jamie Foxx didn't get top billing.
