Lord Of The Rings
A movie studio in New Zealand which was due to host filming of The Hobbit has been wrecked in a serious fire.

The Portsmouth Miniatures Studio in Wellington was used to film iconic scenes for Peter Jackson's "Lord Of The Rings" trilogy and his monster movie remake "King Kong," and had been booked for use on the upcoming blockbuster, which the director will produce.

Fire crews were called to the building on Friday afternoon and they spent three hours tackling the monstrous blaze, which caused extensive damage to the structure. No one was hurt, according to local reports.

Is CGI Technology Enough Of A Reason To Remake 'Clash Of The Titans'?

March 31st, 2010 9:08am EDT
Clash of the Titans
As audiences get set for the update of "Clash of the Titans," many hardcore fans of the classic fantasy film are letting loose with that familiar cry of heresy. Sure, digital effects can look more "real" than the rubber and clay monsters created by legendary stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen for the 1981 original, but better? "Better" is a subjective term.

Ask "Star Wars" geeks which Yoda they prefer. When Luke Skywalker landed on Dagobah in 1981's "The Empire Strikes Back," the Yoda he encountered was a foam and latex puppet, voiced and manipulated by Frank Oz. The "real" Jedi Master ...

The Best & Worst Of Jack Black

June 23rd, 2009 11:25am EDT
Year One
If only life were so simple as to allow enjoyable Jack Black be noticeably different than awful Jack Black. Perhaps the slightly thinner, slightly less beardy version of him could be the best version of him and the more unshaven and huskier version could be the worst version of him, or vice versa; something, anything, that would allow the audience to know what not to waste their time on.

Yes, if only life were this simple.

Sadly, it's not, otherwise I would not have recently lost 97 minutes of my life to Black's latest film, "Year One". While having its moments coming mainly fro...

Actress Naomi Watts is still struggling to come to terms with ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger's death a year ago. Speaking for the first time about her ex's accidental drug overdose death, Watts says, "His fragility touched you... It's still incredibly difficult."

J.J. Abrams Denies Allegations That 'Cloverfield' Exploits 9/11

February 7th, 2008 5:20pm EST
J.J. Abrams
Cloverfield producer J.J. Abrams has dismissed reports the monster movie exploits the trauma suffered by New Yorkers in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the city. Cloverfield follows the adventures of five people attempting to escape from a giant lizard who wreaks havoc in Manhattan - but Abrams insists film goers are wrong to take aim at his movie.

The filmmaker claims there are plenty of recent blockbusters that have used an apocalyptic New York as a backdrop.

Abrams says, "Anyone who is upset with Cloverfield must have had the same reaction to the recent Spider-Ma...

Colin Hanks
Tom Hanks' actor son Colin is directing a documentary about the modern music industry. The King Kong star was inspired to scrutinize record sales and downloading after realizing kids were no longer growing up with the "thrill" of buying music from a store.

He says, "I've bought music online but I'm still very big about going into a record store. I'm very proud to say that I actually paid $14 for the Radiohead CD, and then actually went into the effort of converting it in pounds so I could buy it on the (British band's) website. The film will show the death of the concept of what the mu...

Movie Remakes: 'Heartbreak Kid' Fails While Others Have Succeeded

October 10th, 2007 11:54am EDT
The Heartbreak Kid
The Heartbreak Kid, the latest collaboration between Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers, debuted in second place this past weekend with a modest $14 million haul at the box office. The last Stiller-Farrelly project, 1998's There's Something About Mary, pulled in $176.5 million that year.

The film has been widely panned by critics as less enjoyable than the 1972 original, which starred Cybill Shepherd as the dream girl. Fortunately, not all movie remakes end in disaster and box office disappointment. A few that worked:

A U.S. federal judge ended a six-year trial on Monday by ruling it is illegal for distribution companies to release sanitized versions of movies because it infringes the rights of filmmakers. Peter Jackson Says Naomi Watts Deserved an Oscar Nomination

April 10th, 2006 4:00pm EDT
Naomi Watts
Peter Jackson is outraged Naomi Watts failed to bag an Oscar nomination for her performance in his King Kong remake because she had to work alongside an invisible co-star. Watts only had the giant ape in her imagination when she played heroine Ann Darrow, while the Academy Awards nominees for last month's ceremony acted in less challenging scenarios.

Oscar-winner Jackson says, "Naomi's performance was superb. She is not acting with a huge, 25-foot-tall ape. She is creating so much of that in her mind. Naomi should have been nominated. I thought it was a shame. It was a year of indepen...

George Lucas Thinks Indie Movies Will Replace Blockbusters

March 6th, 2006 1:44pm EST
George Lucas
Movie mogul George Lucas predicts Hollywood will soon start shifting away from mega-budget blockbusters in favor of making more independent films for less money. Alongside Steven Spielberg, Lucas is cited as being chiefly responsible for the blockbuster phenomenon that has gripped the movie industry for the last three decades.

But he now believes big budget films can no longer be profitable and are going out of fashion, as evidenced by this year's Academy Award nominees, including independent movies Crash and Good Night, And Good Luck.

Lucas tells the New York Daily News, "The mar...
