16 Of The Coolest Swords From Pop Culture

May 19th, 2014 2:32pm EDT
The Last Samurai
Swords - what's there to say about them? Nobody uses them anymore, which is a real shame. Swords remind us of an age when men were men, and they focused on really manly things, like chivalry, honor and killing a man with a single blow. Alas, those days are gone, and swords have retired from the battlefield.

But they do live on in one place - our hearts and minds. There's something innately satisfying about the simplicity and elegance of a sword, and the ritual of one-on-one combat, of people testing their mettle mano y mano. To that end, they live on in our culture, and by extension in our...

Hollywood actress Lucy Liu spent years showcasing her art under a pseudonym because she was scared her onscreen reputation would "taint" her side project.

The star is an enthusiastic experimental artist and has been exhibiting her work since 1993 under the name Yu Ling, but she has now gone public with a display in London under her real name.

Liu admits she kept her work secret for such a long time because she didn't want art fans to be influenced by her acting roles, which have included feisty Ling Woo in TV show Ally McBeal and a deadly assassin in the Kill Bill movies.

She tells B...

Four Movies We'd Love To See Quentin Tarantino Direct

4 Movies We
This Oscar season, Quentin Tarantino has earned himself both a Best Director and Best Writer nomination for his work on "Inglourious Basterds," which is up for a total of 8 Oscars, including Best Picture. Despite the common criticism of strong violence and language ever present in his films, each movie release seems to just solidify Tarantino's place as one of the greatest directors of all time. Following the newest wave of success of Basterds, perhaps Tarantino could try his hand at taking over already-established franchises? Here are four movies we would love to see Quentin Tarantino di...

Quentin Tarantino: 'I'd Like To Do A Western'

February 15th, 2010 9:22am EST
Quentin Tarantino Plans A Western Film
Quentin Tarantino is eyeing a Western movie project - he wants to tackle gunslingers and slavery in his next film. The Kill Bill Volume 1 movie maker set his last film, Inglourious Basterds, in Germany in World War II, and he wants to move his next project back to America for a "spaghetti Western."

And Tarantino is determined to put his own spin on the genre.

He tells the New York Daily News, "I'd like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves."

"You coul...

The Oscar Season Begins In August With Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'

August 28th, 2009 11:02am EDT
Inglourious Basterds
The year in movies is always split into two different seasons. First, there's the endless malaise of the Winter, Spring and Summer where we suffer with movies intent on doing nothing more than making money. The second season is much more fruitful, it's when movies care about making money and winning awards.

This moment the season changes is often hard to pinpoint. Normally it occurs in late October when every single movie seems to have a minor-key melody scoring its trailer and actors from Britain make their first appearances.

Sometimes, however, awards season comes in with a ban...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

June 15th, 2009 9:02am EDT
Year One
I finally got around to seeing "Terminator Salvation," and I must admit I wasn't terribly impressed. Overall the film was better than "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," but that doesn't say a whole lot because "T3" was pretty bad. Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin were great, while Christian Bale gave an okay performance. I was expecting a more epic movie considering all its hype.

This week there are five films premiering: "Year One," "The Proposal," "Whatever Works," "Food Inc," and "Dead Snow." There are three I think are worth seeing, and two I think you should wait to rent.

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

April 13th, 2009 8:57am EDT
17 Again
I must admit that two weeks ago, I grossly underestimated how popular "Fast & Furious" would be. The film captured the title of highest grossing opening weekend for a car-themed movie by taking in $72.5 million. I think it's important to note this, because I believe I'm an excellent judge of movies, but I admit the movies I recommend will not always reflect the average American movie patron's opinion.

Things seem to be perfect for up-and-coming U.S. congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck), until the murder of his research assistant and mistress. It becomes ...

Review: A Fan's Reaction to 'Watchmen'

March 5th, 2009 11:09am EST
I grew up in a comic book store, so most of my days after school were spent sitting in a beanbag chair reading graphic novels. It has been a fairly exciting few years for comic fans with the emergence of the mainstream embracing what used to be considered a nerdy habit. With big blockbuster movies like Spider-Man, X-Men, and The Dark Knight taking over the Entertainment industry, it is easier to forgive bad comic movies like Catwoman or Daredevil because at least they're getting these stories out there. At least people are starting to know and love what we've known and loved for decades. Ye...

The Best & Worst Films By Quentin Tarantino

April 24th, 2008 8:30am EDT
Quentin Tarantino
The serendipitous career of eccentric movie producer, director and writer Quentin Tarantino is a complex one. Tarantino has made a name for himself by creating nonlinear storylines and filming multiple perspectives from different characters in his movies - a technique that strays from the more commonly used straight-time storyline.

His films are not off the wall, but they invoke an element of surprise that comes from the small details within a scene that catches one off guard and by adding mysterious elements that never get explained. A good example of this was in Pulp Fiction when M...
