Jason Bateman: Greatest Career Resurrection Ever?

July 7th, 2011 3:00pm EDT
jason bateman
One of the biggest stars in Hollywood right now was practically living in obscurity 15 years ago. The second act of Jason Bateman’s career is almost as unbelievable as it is well-deserved. After a career-boosting (heck, career-reviving) role on Fox’s short-lived sitcom “Arrested Development,” Bateman has become ubiquitous in Hollywood comedies and pretty much synonymous with the passive-aggressive straight man character. This weekend, his new movie “Horrible Bosses” opens nationwide co-starring Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell and Kevin Spacey. The cast, which mi...

According to Allison Janney, it only took one line of dialogue to convince her to return to series television after a four-year absence.

"'Have you seen a small white pill with some Spanish written on it?'" she said, quoting her Mr. Sunshine character. "I read the first line that Crystal said and I knew I was going to play it."

After playing White House press secretary (and later Chief of Staff) C.J. Cregg on The West Wing for six seasons, the 51-year-old actress says she was looking for a role as far from the morally upright C.J. as possible. Crystal is the pill-popping, narcissistic ow...

Ellen Page Always Looks Awkward

Ellen Page
We love Ellen Page. We loved "Juno" and "Whip It!" But she always looks so darned uncomfortable. With really long arms.

She showed up to the "Inception" world premiere in London Thursday in a nondescript black dress. On one hand, we love that she doesn't pander to Hollywood's perception of "beauty," on the other we wish she'd show off her cute figure in a more flattering way!

What do you think of Ellen's red carpet look and style in general?

When “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” is released on June 30, fans will be introduced to the third director to tackle an adaptation of Stephanie Meyers’ popular series of books. Director David Slade will follow in the steps of Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”) and Chris Weitz (“The Twilight Saga: New Moon”) to interpret the vampire love story that has led to a craze of die hard followers.

However, in Hollywood, Slade needs no introduction. In 2005, his film “Hard Candy” exploded onto the indie film scene, the catalyst being a disturbing screenplay by Brian Nelson and a startlingly strong pe...

Biggest Movie Surprises of 2009

December 28th, 2009 12:00pm EST
Star Trek
At the start of every new year, critics and movie fans alike look at the list of movies for the year and start to consider what looks the best, the worst, and what might surprise them. There are shocking hits, failures, and then the movies with the highest expectations that actually succeed ... or totally crash and burn. 2009 had some excellent blockbusters that might have annoyed the critics ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "G.I. Joe," "New Moon") but still managed to kill in the box office. Then there were the indie films that managed to become hits, or the big star names that neve...

Up in the Air
Up in the Air is the third film from acclaimed director Jason Reitman. After the indie hit Thank You for Smoking and the Oscar-winning Juno, the name Reitman now makes everyone think "Oscar buzz." Reitman himself always thought the name would help him out all along.

"My whole life, people told me nepotism was actually going to pave the way for my career," Reitman joked. "Nepotism let me down."

Instead, the son of comedy hitmaker Ivan Reitman got his start when a different industry's success story gave him a break. "I got a call from my agent saying, 'There's an internet millionaire, ...

Tomorrow evening I will have the opportunity to see Jason Reitman's new travel comedy "Up in the Air" starring George Clooney. I have read a number of early favorable reviews of the film, and I really like Reitman's movies, so I'm fairly excited.

In addition to "Up in the Air" films opening this week include "Armored," "Brothers," "Everybody's Fine," "Serious Moonlight," and "Transylmania."

25 Top Movies Of 2009 (So Far)

November 26th, 2009 9:44am EST
2009
As with every year there are dozens of great movies but there are even more really bad ones. 2009 will be marked by Quentin Tarantino and Sacha Baron Cohen comebacks along with a bevy of bad movies, highlighted by Megan Fox's performance in Jennifer's Body. There were plenty of good movies and we may have the most fun making fun of the bad and helpless ones, but let's take a look at the best movies of 2009.

Most blockbuster movies are filled with overrated stars (i.e. Will Smith and Tom Cruise) and are seemingly contrived, made only to make money. Thankfully this year there were not as ...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'The Informant,' 'Jennifer's Body' & More

The Informant
Last week, the long weekend gave me a chance to see "District 9" in the movie theater. The film's science fiction elements took a back seat to its moral objective however, which was roughly to serve as an allegory for the Apartheid in South Africa.

Treatment of the aliens by humans, as a subhuman species really becomes emotionally jarring through the intense blood and gore that comprise the latter half of the movie. Audiences ultimately walk away from "District 9" disgusted by the inhumanity of the human race.

A nontraditional narrative, "District 9" is largely told through the use ...

Actors Who Have Transitioned From TV To Film

For some actors, it is hard to make the crucial transition into film as a television star. Especially if you are typecast as a certain character and most people can't think of you as anyone else (for example, Matt LeBlanc as Joey on Friends). Television actors put their careers on the line when they leave their steady jobs to branch out into the film world, and they either make it or they don't. Here are the top television stars who managed to hold their own in the film world.

Coming-Of-Age Films That We All Remember

Making the transition from adolescence into adulthood is a critical phase in an individual's life. This coming-of-age period, which has been coined "emerging adulthood" by Clark University research professor, Dr. Jeffrey Arnett, is characterized by identity exploration, self-focus, instability, a belief in boundless possibilities, and feeling in-between. According to Arnett's theory, in industrialized societies the types of experiences that people have who are in their late teens to mid-20's have changed dramatically over the past 50 years. Instead of being quick to make that walk down the ...

Blockbusters, Comedies & Animated Films To Benefit From New Oscar Rule

In a move that had everybody checking their calendars to make sure it wasn't still April 1, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just announced that this year there will be TEN Best Picture nominees instead of the five-film shortlist that's existed since 1944.

So what does this mean exactly? That is, apart from the additional five minutes of clips at the Oscar show and the inevitable surprise of a bleary-eyed Oscar Nominee presenter who realizes they aren't finished after reading the name of the fifth film off the TelePrompTer? Plenty.

The Animation Rule No Longer Applies...

When the "diaper chicken" sketch gets cut, Jenna fakes an injury to get people to fawn all over her, but with her birthday coming up in a few days, she shouldn't go to too bad of extremes, right? Aw, if you're nodding in agreement, then you obviously don't "go to there" often with 30 Rock!
