Box Office: 'Gravity' Should Prevail Over 'Carrie' Remake

October 18th, 2013 11:10am EDT
1) Gravity- 31M Weekend, 165M Total

After dipping a mere 22% last week, Gravity is actually gaining back some of the IMAX screens it lost to Captain Phillips. Another similar drop for Gravity should keep it firmly in first place.

2) Carrie- 18M Weekend, 18M Total

The problem with Carrie is that it is a remake. And they’ve tried to bring Carrie back before (anyone remember Carrie 2?) and it hasn’t worked out well for anyone. The preview makes it seem like critics are loving it, but it only has a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes. It should do OK this weekend, but I don’t think it’s a smash hit.

Weekend Box Office: 'Prisoners' Takes An Easy First

September 23rd, 2013 8:36am EDT
The well reviewed Hugh Jackman pic beat expectations and was crowned the champion (by a long shot). It should play well over the coming weeks with increasing awards buzz. The film received a B+ cinemascore, so word of mouth will be good, but not The Butler sized.

1) Prisoners- 21.4M Weekend, 21.4M Total

2) Insidious: Chapter 2- 14.2M Weekend, 50.5M Total

The horror sequel dipped 64% in week two, pretty typical for this genre. A third installment has already been ordered, as the sequel will definitely outgross the original.

3) The Family- 7.0M Weekend, 25.6M Total

Robert DeNiro’s limpin...

Review: James Wan Continues Good And Bad Streak With 'Insidious: Chapter 2'

September 13th, 2013 1:07pm EDT
Insidious 2
What’s really uncanny about James Wan as a director is how consistent he is creating films with both good and bad moments.  With the exception of the horrible misfire "Death Sentence," virtually every Wan film for me contains some real bits of genius alongside some daft story turns that give pause.  It’s no clearer than in his latest horror opus "Insidious Chapter 2," a meaningful and at the same time inane follow up to his much more even-toned first film.  Can sincere and stupid exist in the same movie – it can if you’re James Wan.

For those who remember from the first film (and those who...

Box Office Predictions: 'Insidious Chapter 2' Will Take The Weekend

September 13th, 2013 10:45am EDT
Insidious Chapter 2
1) Insidious: Chapter 2- 20.0M Weekend, 20.0M Total

The original opened to 13M, and eventually grossed 54M domestically. The sequel benefits from a painfully dead box office, solid word of mouth, and The Conjuring, which scared up good audiences in July. People may watch Insidious 2 without having seen the original. 20M for the weekend is likely.

2) The Family- 12M Weekend, 12M Total

Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfieffer star in a mob dramedy that is tracking soft, but is opening into an empty marketplace. The marketing push for this has been solid, with Luc Besson and Martin Scorsese on a...

'Insidious Chapter 2' Review: A Sequel That's Scary Good Fun

September 12th, 2013 11:55pm EDT
Insidious Chapter 2
For those of you who think your family has problems wait until you meet the Lamberts.

We were first introduced to them a few years back in the horror film; 'Insidious' and things have not gotten any better for them.

To refresh everyone's memory or in case you missed the first film, here's a brief synopsis about what transpired.

Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) and his Mrs., (Rose Bryne) thought their house was haunted and for a very good reason.

Their young son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) who had and still has the ability to travel out of his physical body, met the spirit of a really scary old wo...
