'Inglourious Basterds' Inspired By Wacky Gangster Film

November 18th, 2012 12:55pm EST
Inglourious Basterds
Quentin Tarantino's cult war movie Inglourious Basterds was inspired by a little-known 1940s film about three U.S. gangsters on a mission to kill Nazi leader Adolf Hitler.

The moviemaker admits he came up with the idea for the quirky Brad Pitt film after watching 1942 drama Hitler - Dead or Alive.

Tarantino tells Playboy magazine, "A rich guy offers a million-dollar bounty on Hitler's life (and) three gangsters come up with a plan to kill Hitler. They parachute into Berlin (German) and work their way to where Hitler is. It's a wacky movie that goes from being serious to very funny.

Eli Roth
Actor/director Eli Roth is no stranger to exploring the nature of evil. As a master of horror with films like "Inglorious Basterds" and "Hostel," Roth turns his lens to research possibly the most horrifying monster of them all - the average American.

In Curiosity's "How Evil are You?," Roth sets out to recreate the infamous Milgram experiment to see how, or if, the results have changed. Roth himself even undergoes tests and scans to see if he carries what researchers dub "the evil gene."

So does Hollywood's famous horror director have a little extra "edge" in his craft?

The show pre...

Oscar's Big Change And Four Small Changes That Come Along With It

On Tuesday, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in a rare moment of clarity, re-opened the possibility of a limited field of nominees for Best Picture each year. In other words, after two years of nonsense, a Best Picture nomination actually matters again.

The new system is very simple. It works similarly to the way Baseball Players are elected to the Hall of Fame. Academy member vote in much the same way as they have the last two years – ranking their nominees from 1 through 10.

Except now, instead of a convoluted vote counting process that leads to scavenging for a tenth no...

Tonight's Oscar ceremony is probably the most re-designed ceremony in Academy history.

Just look at all the changes. 10 Best Picture nominees, two hosts, no Best Song performances, more dance, a supposed streamlined show, and, weirdest of all, a request for no "thank yous" during the acceptance speeches.

Plus, a few of last year's tweaks will remain. They're sticking with the abhorrent practice of having five actors come out and sing the praises of the year's present crop of nominees (at least only in the Leading categories this year), and the producers are insistent on further expandin...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a throwback to more competitive days, Academy Award presenters rehearsed the line "and the winner is ..." instead of the blander "and the Oscar goes to ..." for Sunday's show.

The last time the language was used officially was for the 60th Academy Awards in 1988, when "The Last Emperor" won for best picture. The following year, show producer Allan Carr changed the wording, although some presenters ignored the new guidelines.

Why? Because nobody seems to have any real clue as to which movie will win Best Picture. “Avatar” seems like a good choice – it made $700 Million, changed movies, James Cameron directs, yada yada yada – but so does “The Hurt Locker” with its crazy critical raves and industry buzz. Compounding the problem is the Weinstein-backed “Inglorious Basterds” which has been gaining momentum all month. It’s a logjam at the top.

This is created not only by the fact that we have ten Best Picture nominees this year, but because the n...
