Will Smith is reportedly considering starring in the "Independence Day" sequel. He played U.S. Marine Corps pilot Captain Steven Hiller in the 1996 sci-fi film.

Director Roland Emmerich told Digital Spy.com: "I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn't want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen."

Emmerich wanted to cast some familiar faces from the original movie in the sequel, but prior to the release of Smith's latest film "After Earth" Emmerich said the actor was "too expensive" to employ.

Will Smith won't be saying "Welcome to Earf" in either of the two (yes, two) upcoming sequels to 1996 ailen invasion blockbuster Independence Day.

Director Roland Emmerich, who helmed the first film, is set to return for the second and third installments; but he says getting his top star to return would be "too expensive."

"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive, but he'd also be too much of a marquee name. It would be too much," Emmerich tells the New York Daily News.

Hollywood star Will Smith has thrown his support behind Barack Obama after the President proposed a tax hike for high earners.

Obama has called for those who make more than $1 million a year to pay at least 30 per cent of their income in taxes.

And the Independence Day star insists he's happy to hand over more of his pay check to support the struggling American economy.
