Drew Barrymore Is Hollywood's Most Overpaid Star - See Who Else Made The List!

November 4th, 2011 9:00am EDT
Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore and Eddie Murphy have been named and shamed as the most overpaid actors in Hollywood.

The Forbes.com poll suggests Barrymore's recent movies have generated a return of just $0.40 for every $1 she is paid by film studio bosses, thanks to box office flops "Whip It," "Everybody's Fine" and last year's "Going The Distance," which earned a paltry $17.8 million in U.S. ticket sales.

Murphy fared considerably better - his films returned $2.70 for every dollar, but it wasn't enough to save him from second place on the list as 2008's "Meet Dave" and 2009's "Imagine That" failed to a...

Summer Movie Awards Part 1: Surprise Hit, Biggest Bombs & More

September 9th, 2009 9:53am EDT
G.I. Joe
Now that Labor Day has come and gone, the official end to summer has now passed. Yes, the days will now be shorter, the weather cooler (unless you're smart enough to live in Southern California like this column's scribe), and for some school resuming its session, but there's also a lot of good news.

TV is back, football is back, and summer movie season is finally at its end. Yes, no more summer movies, no more endless weekends filled with event films that shatter theater speakers and routinely melt screens with too much rambunctious action. It's a thankful end to a season that routine...

When Good Actors Do Bad Movies

August 7th, 2009 9:20am EDT
G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra
Entering theatres with a torrent of bad buzz, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" has all the makings of a big-time flop - not necessarily a shock given the thin source material.

What is surprising, however, is the appearance of indie stalwart and critically acclaimed actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the role of Cobra Commander. It's not the kind of fare he's normally associated with, but he isn't the first good actor to show up in a bad, bad film.

Why does this happen? There are myriad reasons, but these are the most popular:

Material temptation: It's not easy turning down a $20 million ...

Sarah's Cinema Musings: This Summer's Hits & Misses

The Ugly Truth
Ok, we are almost through the summer season of film, and I, for one, feel like I am trying to resuscitate an almost dead corpse. Sure, there were hits, good films, and technical blockbuster hits, but were they really great or just great within their summer context?

The Blockbusters

Just because a movie generates revenue at the box office does not necessarily translate into a successful well-loved film. X-Men Origins: Wolverine for instance, didn't exactly start the season off with a bang. Star Trek was loved by both fans and non-fans; something that was a bit of a worry before th...

This Week's Movie Buzz: See It, Rent It, Or Skip It?

June 8th, 2009 9:00am EDT
Imagine That
Following up from last week, "The Hangover" turned out to be a hilarious movie. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. I liked it so much that I actually ended up seeing it twice. For a more in-depth discussion of the movie, feel free to check out my review.

This week there are four movies premiering - two thrillers, a comedy, and a drama. We have "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3," "Moon," "Imagine That," and "Tetro."

THE TAKING OF PELHAM 1 2 3

In this remake of the 1974 film, "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" a New York City subway dispatcher named Walter Garber (D...

Starpulse's Explosive Summer Movie Preview

May 1st, 2009 10:06am EDT
Star Trek
Since the dawn of the American cinematic blockbuster in the late 1970s and early 1980s, moviegoers have eagerly waited for May - the unofficial beginning of summertime. This summer is no different. Films, and most popular media, are social mirrors, and this summer season supports that. The large box office contenders all deal with very similar themes: escapism and the support of the lone, outlaw hero figure (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, Up, Transformers 2, Public Enemies, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra, Inglourious Basterds, et...
