Review: 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus' Is A Storyteller's Tale For Gilliam, Ledger Fans

December 28th, 2009 1:26pm EST
The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
Terry Gilliam is an interesting Hollywood director in that he's bizarre and not mainstream, and yet his films are so interesting and bizarre that they get critical acclaim and great notice. His started with the "Monty Python" gang and moved on to hits like "Brazil," "Time Bandits," "12 Monkeys," and "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas." He had his fair share of failures too with the odd "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and the lukewarm critical reactions to his film "The Brothers Grimm." It was always an uphill battle for Gilliam since his movies are visually intriguing, mind bending, and n...

"Number one, I chose people who were close friends of Heath's so they know Heath," Gilliam said. "So that's to start. Then we gave them all DVDs of what we'd been able to assemble of what Heath had done so they can see what he was do...

Johnny Depp felt "privileged" to replace Heath Ledger in new movie The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus, describing the late star as a "thundering and ungovernable talent."

The Ten Greatest Movies Of The Decade

The Ten Greatest Movies Of The Decade
So far, we've given you lists of the Ten Greatest TV Shows, Songs, and Albums of the decade. Now it's time to turn our focus to the Silver Screen.

This decade, moviemaking became incredibly fractured. After the Indie Boom of the nineties there suddenly wasn't much of a difference between an independent/art film and the mainstream movies from blockbuster studios. Many of these studios were now attempting to make their own indies, blurring the lines and resulting in more failures than successes.

Of course, there were still plenty of good movies to go around. The following is a list ...

Critics Not Impressed With Heath Ledger's Last Film

May 23rd, 2009 7:35am EDT
Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger's final film has been given a lukewarm reception at the Cannes Film Festival - and many critics were shocked to see his character hanging from a London bridge with a rope around his neck in his first scene.

Ledger died in January, 2008 before he completed work on Terry Gilliam's fantasy film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus; Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to complete his part in the movie.

Heath Ledger
Heath Ledger's final film The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is facing a limited U.S. release as bosses struggle to land a deal with a major distributor.

Executives have been searching for six months for backers in America but are having difficulty finding a company to release the experimental movie, which features late actor Ledger as a traveling magician.

And American audiences may not have easy access to the independent project as a result of the marketing difficulties.

An industry source tells Reuters, "This movie stars Heath Ledger in his final performance - it will get...

January 20th, 2009 8:43am EST
Heath Ledger
British moviemaker Terry Gilliam is still fighting reports his pal Heath Ledger was experimenting with drugs at the time he died a year ago because the actor was "clean."

Ledger died from an overdose of prescription drugs he was taking to try and cure insomnia, but many suggested he was on much stronger narcotics and the speculation continues as the anniversary of the tragedy approaches.

But Gilliam, who was working with Ledger on his final film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus when the star died, is desperate to set the record straight.

He tells Entertainment Weekly magazine...

Director Terry Gilliam Struggling With Ledger's Final Scenes

January 18th, 2009 10:00pm EST
Terry Gilliam
Editing Heath Ledger's final movie has been tough for director Terry Gilliam - because he's reminded every day of what a great actor the star was.

The Aussie was shooting Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus when he died from an accidental drug overdose last year - and now the British filmmaker has the tough task of piecing his great scenes together.

Gilliam says, "It's like I work with Heath every day. He's in fine shape, at least in the world I'm inhabiting at the moment. It just doesn't make sense. Every day goes by and I think, 'He'll be back in a second.'"

Verne Troyer's Pain At Ledger Death

January 4th, 2009 1:00pm EST
Verne Troyer
Pint-sized movie star Verne Troyer was so cut up following the death of co-star Heath Ledger, he found it hard to return to the movie set they shared.

Ledger was filming The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus with Troyer prior to his death last year. And after the tiny star learnt of Ledger's untimely passing, he was wary of commencing filming again. He says, "Going on set after he died was one of the most difficult things I ever did. I had scenes with him right before he died."

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell have donated their fee for completing Heath Ledger's final film role to the late star's daughter.

The acting trio agreed to play versions of Ledger's character Tim in The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus following his death in January. And they decided to donate their fees to two-year-old Matilda - Ledger's daughter with actress Michelle Williams - because the star left an old will which did not include the little girl.

Director Terry Gilliam has praised the actors for their generosity, saying: "They didn't take money - it goes to Heath's daugh...

Johnny Depp has followed through on his promise to a 12-year-old Oshkosh, Wisconsin, fan - by sending him the fedora he wore as bank robber John Dillinger in new film Public Enemies.

Jack Taylor asked for the actor's hat after meeting him on the set of the movie and an amused Depp agreed to pass it on "when I'm done with it."

And, after Taylor's parents reminded Depp of his promise in a letter to the movie star's production company, the young fan received a package in the post.

In the box was the hat and various other promotional items from Depp's past films.

Heath Ledger
Producers working on Heath Ledger's final film have vowed not to alter the late star's last performance, even though the actor never got the chance to complete the project before his untimely death.

In his honor, Hollywood superstars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law have signed up to feature in the film, which is due for release next year.
