Terrence Howard is in talks to portray soul legend Marvin Gaye in moviemaker Cameron Crowe's biopic after Will Smith rejected the role.

The Golden Age Of Black Talent In Hollywood

March 2nd, 2010 10:05am EST
Are Black Men The Dominant Leading Actors Of This Era
Hollywood has always had its share of big-name black talent, from Sidney Poitier to Hattie McDaniel to Louis Gossett, Jr. But looking back, none of those big names owned Hollywood like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, or Audrey Hepburn did. Poitier, McDaniel, and Gossett, Jr. were immensely talented pioneers, but they were vastly outnumbered by their peers in the industry. Unfortunate as it was, they were the exception in Hollywood, not the rule.

This was probably due in part to the social fabric of America at the time. It can’t have been easy for Sidney Poitier, even with his incredible tal...

Now that it's the year 2010, a decade into the new era, the next big year people suspect the world could end is 2012, in accordance with the termination of the Mayan calendar. In 2009, people flocked to see "2012" a Roland Emmerich film fictionally portraying the same prophesied destruction the year is s...

Movies That Did Not Live Up To Their Potential

March 3rd, 2009 10:39am EST
Star Wars Episode III
Nothing can be more frustrating than something not living up to its potential. Movies are especially guilty of this. There's something about watching a movie that was on to something but didn't quite make it that can stick with you. Watching them unfold feels akin to a runner screaming towards the finish line only to fall and break their ankle thirty feet short. Films like these fall apart for many reasons be it last minute changes by a studio, unnecessary plot twists, or just good old-fashioned incompetence. For whatever reason, these movies are bad-they just didn't have to be. Here's a fe...

Early last month Sony received word that Tom Cruise was dropping out of "Edwin A. Salt" due to similarities to Cruise's "Mission Impossible" franchise. Less than a week later, "Salt" had a new star, Angelina Jolie, and a greenlight. The script re-write began immediately in order to change the lead role to suit a female. The fastest turn around in Hollywood history had been pulled off thanks to a woman.

Music entertainers are constantly making the transition from the world of singing to acting. The goal is usually to be a double, triple or quadruple threat via becoming an amazing musician/actor; musician/actor/producer or musician/actor/producer/director.

Specifically, it is not uncommon to hear of rappers going from the music video screen to the small and big screens. There a number of them who have done it quite successfully. But, there are three in particular whose success has surpassed all expectations. They are: Will Smith (a.k.a. Fresh Prince), Mark Wahlberg (a.k.a. Marky Ma...

The Academy Awards are just one big popularity contest, right? Everyone has an agenda, everything is fixed, its Hollywood's Prom and this year Michael Clayton is just the Prom King.

Some of it's true and some isn't, and most of the movies nominated this year are rightfully so. That just doesn't reconcile that so many great movies fall through the cracks each year, for whatever reason, and don't get their just deserts.

They're overlooked, they're under-appreciated, and they're forgotten. They may not be the very greatest ever made, but they still deserve to get let in on the celeb...

Underworld
A recent conversation involving the short-lived, obscure (but highly entertaining) Fox television series "Werewolf" prompted us to take a closer look at some of the failures peppered throughout the history of supernatural horror in television and film. And there are a lot of them.

The genre has always been somewhat popular (especially in literature), and projects continue to appear on screen with some regularity. Unfortunately, the quality of those productions remains quite low. Sure, there are exceptions. Television shows like "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel" and films lik...

10. The Cast of High School Musical

The group that made "High School Musical" a phenomenon went through a lot in 2007. They rocketed from nobodys to tabloid fixations (hello, Zac Efron), from adorable, dimple-cheeked Hilary Duff's in-the-making to sex symbols (naked photos of Vannessa Hudgens, anyone?). The point is, these singing and dancing young actors...

Part Two - Visions of Sugarplums- Fantasy

Closely linked to the "Instant Holiday Classic" is a surge in fantasy films that often accompany the season. The fantasy genre capitalizes on that same childhood yearning for holiday magic that Christmas specials do. These feelings open the door to fantastical worlds, and not just those located in the North Pole.

Last year marked a noticeable absence of these films despite the success...
